How to use 15-day Swiss Travel Pass for 16 days?

Short summary – read this first

Doris is planning a 16-day trip around Switzerland, starting in Zurich and covering Lucerne, Wengen, Zermatt, Montreux, and Bern. She needs advice on how to manage her transportation, especially since the Swiss Travel Pass only covers 15 days. A suggestion is to buy the Swiss Travel Pass for days 2-16 and a separate ticket for her first journey from Zurich to Lucerne.

Key takeaways:
  • Purchase the 15-day Swiss Travel Pass for days 2-16 and buy a separate ticket from Zurich to Lucerne for your arrival day.
  • Consider using the Swiss Travel Pass on day 1 if you plan on making a mountain trip; otherwise, a point-to-point ticket is more economical for that day.
  • Look into the Saver Day Pass as an additional option to optimize your travel plans.

    Hi,

Swiss pass has only 15 days but I will stay in Swiss for 16 days, what should I buy ?

Arrive at Zurich in the morning by plane and go straight to Luzern ,

Staying at Luzern for 4 nights (explore the town , Rigi, Titlis, boat trip and lake )

Then stay at Wengen for 4 nights ( First, Bachalpsee, Jungfraujoch, Lauterbrunnen, Murren, Mannilichen, Klein Scheidegg, Grindelward )

Then stay at Zermatt for 3 nights ( Gornergrat, Matterhorn, Sunnegga, Blauherd, Riffelsee )

Then go Montreux for 2 nights ( Chateau de Chillon, Vinyard, Rivaz, St. Saphorin, Vevery )

Finally, go Bern for the last 2 nights ( explore the town )

last day , Bern to Zurich early in the morning for taking flight at 11:45am

Would you please suggest me for the Pass or how should I do with the 15 days pass ?

    Thanks so much.

    Doris

    Hi Doris,

I’d buy the 15 day Swiss Travel Pass to use on days 2-16 and for your first day just buy a ticket from Zurich to Lucerne (assuming those are your only travel plans that day). Tickets are around 20chf.

If you plan on going to a mountain or lake trip on day 1 it may then be cheaper to use your STP for day 1 to 15 and then buy a regular ticket from Bern to Zurich airport on day 16.

The simple way to a perfect Swiss trip

Thx so much for your comments , I think I will take the first 15 day pass once arrival and buy tickets from Bern to Zurich on the last day .

    Hello Hoho66,

The Saver Day Pass is also often a valid option to “extend” the Swiss Travel Pass, depending on your plans and needs for that day.

Zurich – Luzern is your shortest rail ‘hop’ so will be the cheapest route on which to buy a point to point ticket, so I would do that if I were you.

Yes it is but you arrive in the morning. What are you going to do that day? Mountain excursions? If so, and it is a beautiful day it would be disappointing to miss it.

Your last day of travel would only only be by standard trains so although a tiny bit more $$ may be worthwhile paying point to point.

Do look into the saver day pass, as Steph suggested.
