Hiking in Grindelwald – early May

Short summary – read this first

A traveler is planning a trip to Grindelwald with their partner in early May and wants to know if several hiking trails, like the First Cliff Walk and Eiger Trail, will be open. They are concerned about possible closures due to the high altitude and are looking for alternative scenic hikes if their original plans are not feasible.

Key takeaways:
  • Most high-altitude trails in Grindelwald may be closed in May, so consider trails in the valleys instead.
  • The Lauterbrunnen – Stechelberg trail is an easy and beautiful hike you can do from Grindelwald.
  • Day trips to Interlaken, Lake Thun, and Lake Brienz offer additional exploration options.
  • Use the SBB timetable to efficiently plan your journeys around the area.
  • Check local resources for more hiking ideas that suit early May conditions.

    Hi all,

I am planning a trip with my partner to Grindelwald in early May this year. We are interested in the following activities, some of which involve hiking trails. However, we heard that many of the trails/activities might be closed during this time of the year and would like to get some information if the activities which we would like to do would be feasible:

    1. First cliff walk

    2. Bachalpsee lake – hiking from First

    3. Eiger Trail

    4. Grosse Scheidegg – hiking from First

It is our understanding that due to the high altitude of some of these hiking trails, that they often are closed till June. Are there any other alternative hikes with nice scenery which we could attempt (in the case where we are unable to do the above stated activities)?

    Thank you!

    Hi Ewong,

    Welcome to MySwissAlps!

Unfortunately, Spring comes late in the higher altitudes so yes, all the trails you listed may not be accessible in May. Around this time it’s best to explore the various trails in the valleys, and along the rivers and lakes.

The Lauterbrunnen – Stechelberg is an easy trail you can do from Grindelwald. You can combine this hike with a visit to Schilthorn and Trummelbach Falls if you have time:

For more hiking suggestions, have a look at this page: http://www.myswissalps.com/grindelwald/activities and use the drop down menu to search for activities and trails that might interest you

Also, you could do day trips out of Grindelwald to Interlaken, Lake Thun and Lake Brienz which offer more opportunities for exploration.

I’d highly recommend using the SBB timetable to plan your journey: http://www.myswissalps.com/timetable

    Regards,

    Anna
