Hiking in Jungfrau Region in September

Short summary – read this first

A traveler, MattThopkins, and his wife are planning a 10-day trip to the Jungfrau region in early September and want to find less crowded hiking trails that still offer stunning views. They have previously hiked the north face trail above Murren and are seeking recommendations for similar hikes away from the typical tourist routes.

Key takeaways:
  • Start hikes early in the morning or on weekdays to avoid crowds.
  • Check local hiking resources or the official Jungfrau website for less-known trails.
  • The Swiss Travel Pass gives you access to various trains and discounts, making travel easier in the region.
  • For a great snowy view in September, consider visiting Mt. Titlis if you're near Lucerne.

Hello, my wife and I plan on spending 10 days in the Jungfrau region in early September. Like many people, we prefer to stay away from the crowds when hiking. Are there are some hikes that will keep us away from the crowds but are still give us access to the incredible sights? We have hiked up the north face trail above Murren. That was beautiful and not crowded. We appreciate any suggestions.

    Hi MattThopkins,

Hiking trails offering beautiful views are quite popular in the summer and this is especially true in the Jungfrau region. If you wish to avoid the crowd, I suggest starting out early or go on a week day instead of Saturday or Sunday. The Jungfrau region has plenty of trails that are considered off the beaten track. You can a list of options here: http://www.myswissalps.com/jungfrauregion/activities (scroll down to the hiking section). You can also check the official Jungfrau website or get in touch with the local tourist information centre.

    Regards,

    Anna

In early September you will find that many of the tourists have gone home. And, typically, the weather is the best of the year. Good pick!

You will likely still see some crowding around train stations but that dissipates when the train leaves.

Here’s a link to hikes and other info about basing in Wengen:

    Hi Matt,

I’m where you are in vetting hikes. Def making over to Stoos for the ridge hike. Check it out on You tube.

Focused on my next trip to Yosemite NP in 3 weeks for a 7 day backpacking trip. Switzerland will be the icing trip in September! LMK if you come up with any good hikes.

Thank you for all of this great information! In early September, approximately what altitude or where is the snow level (know that this can change depending on the year)?

We’re planning a trip and would like to go up into the snow but return to a lower altitude to hike. Is early September the time to go for this?

Hi My wife and I are going to Grindelwald the first week in September and plan to do the walk to the Berghaus Baeregg. We couldn’t get there our last 2 trips, but if it’s as cool as the old walk to Stieregg was, then it will be spectacular! Take the cable car (or walk) to Pfingstegg and hike from there. From Pfingstegg it takes about 1.5 hrs to get there and you can get lunch and sit on the terrace and enjoy the view.

    Have fun

    Hi R2go,

For the most part, you won’t see a lot of snow in the Jungfrau region without going up to the Jungfraujoch. However, if you’re in Lucerne, Mt Titlis is a good place to see some snow in September. Enjoy your trip.

    Regards,

    Danielsan

    Thanks Danielsan.

R2go, here’s our handy link to Mt. Titlis:

Another option is Mittelallalin in the Saas Valley.

Just going forward, if there are any additional questions on snow in September, please open up another thread as this thread is directed at “Hiking in the Jungfrau region”. Thanks for your understanding.

    Kind regards,

    Yolanda

    Anna, Yolanda, Danielsan,

We want to hike Oeschinen Lake and will be staying in both Lucern & Wengen. Which of these hubs would be best for getting to the lake and route? We will have the STP.

    Thanks,

    Steve

    Hi Steve,

You can be in Kandersteg in a little over an hour from Wengen. Its about a half hour south of Spiez, which is twenty min from Interlaken, as versus about two plus hours from Luzerne.

Im going to be in Wengen on the 15th, are you already gone by then?

    Regards,

    Danielsan

    Hi Danielsan,

Thanks, as always , for your insight. We will be in Wengen from Sept. 4-7. Sorry, will miss you! Drinks would have been on me !!

It appears from the STP map that I can go the entire way via train to Kanderstag.

Will be a tough decision to leave the Jungfraugh mtns for a day to do this hike.

    Hi Steve,

Yea, too bad we’ll miss. Would’ve fun to hook up.

You should be able to tear yourself away from the Jungfrau region for a day. Looks beautiful, and it’s on my agenda this go around. Have fun.

    Danielsan
