Hi Delraysun1,
Welcome to MySwissAlps.
Both Zermatt and Wengen offer plenty of hiking opportunities especially in September.
But if it’s your first time in Switzerland, I recommend spending more time in the Jungfrau region and using Wengen as a base. The Jungfrau region has mountains as well as lakes so you’ll get to see different views and landscapes. You can find further details from the links below:
Hope this gets you started.
regards,
Anna

Both destinations are absolutely great for hiking in autumn! If it is not possible to travel to both places I would flip a coin to make a decision 🙂
Maybe it will also help to watch one or the other video from these places on my YouTube channel!

Have a great trip!

Hi Martin!
Thanks. Your YouTube channel is full of great videos! However, I’m afraid you’ll have to limit yourself referring and linking to it. Please see the following forum rule (to be found at https://www.myswissalps.com/forum/rules): “Spamming, advertising or selling items is not allowed. You are allowed to occasionally mention your business if it’s relevant in the discussion.”
A good way to go around this is to put your YouTube URL in your MySwissAlps.com profile, just as you did. This allows al visitors to find it.
Thanks for your understanding, and keep up the good work advising Switzerland visitors!

I have hiked a fair amount in both locations and in my opinion the hiking is spectacular in both. I would say the hiking around Wengen is slightly better. There is a little more variety and overall the scenery is a little more spectacular in the Jungfrau area. However Zermatt has views of the iconic Matterhorn and Gornergrat which should not be missed. Both locations have a nice variety of length and difficulty of hikes to choose from.

Thanks Mark. I tend to agree from my research. I am leaning towards staying an extra night in Wengen vs Zermatt for the hiking.
Much appreciated.

Hello Arno
Thank you very much for your message! It was not the intention to advertise my YouTube channel. It’s nice to be able to point people who don’t know their way around or have to decide between destinations to a video from the area. Of course I understand the point about self-promotion and will take that into account in the future.
Thanks for moderating this informative forum!
