Hiking in Zermatt in May

Short summary – read this first

A traveler, Cristina, is planning a weekend hiking trip in Zermatt from May 10 to 13 but faces challenges due to potential trail closures. She specifically wants to know about the 5 lakes walk and the status of the Blauherd cable car, as well as the safety of the Randa bridge path.

Key takeaways:
  • The Sunnegga-Blauherd gondola operates only from June 16 to September 30, so it won’t be available during your visit.
  • Generally, trails are closed for safety reasons, so it’s best to check current conditions before hiking.
  • For up-to-date trail statuses, visit the local Zermatt hiking website.

    Hello everyone,

me and a friend are planning to spend a weekend hiking in Zermatt (10-13 May). Unfortunately May is a very tricky month since most of the paths and hats will be closed.

Any suggestions for nice (and safe) hikes to do in that time of the year?

I would really like to do the 5 lakes walk but I can’t figure out if the Blauherd cable car will be open at that time.

The Randa bridge was also in my plans but a friend who was there couple weeks ago told me the path is closed. I would like to know if this is due only to the path’s conditions or also to the bridge safetiness.

Thank you very much to whoever will give us some tips!

Hi Cristina, and welcome to MySwissAlps!

    >> me and a friend are planning to spend a weekend hiking in Zermatt (10-13 May)I would really like to do the 5 lakes walk but I can’t figure out if the Blauherd cable car will be open at that time.

The Sunnegga-Blauherd gondola operates from 16 Jun until 30 Sept 2018.

When hiking trails are closed, it is usually for safety reasons. Others with experience in hiking around Zermatt can hopefully provide you with more details.

The season for this walk is described as Jun-Sep:
