Which activities and rail pass for 4 days Zurich in mid-January?

Short summary – read this first

Jeff is planning a short trip to Zurich for mid-January with four full days to explore the city and surrounding areas. He wants recommendations for day trips, especially to the mountains, and is confused about travel passes, particularly the Swiss Travel Pass.

Key takeaways:
  • Consider staying in Lucerne for day trips to Mt. Pilatus while based in Zurich, as it's only about 1 hour and 15 minutes by train from the airport.
  • A scenic train ride on the Lucerne-Interlaken Express is a great option for exploring the Jungfrau region.
  • Using the Swiss Travel Pass can make many of your trips cheaper, including trips to Mt. Pilatus and other attractions around Zurich.

We have a short trip to Zurich planned for mid January 2026 with four full days to enjoy Zurich.
Our plan is to spend two days in and around Zurich and two day trips outside of Zurich with one being to the mountains.
Given the short winter days, unpredictable weather and your advice of keeping travel within 90 minutes of your base, any recommendations would be appreciated.
One trip we are considering is to Mt. Pilatus.

Also researching the various travel passes has been somewhat confusing.  Advice would be appreciated also.

Frohe Weihnachten und ein guten Rutsch ins Neue Jahr,

    Jeff

    Hi Jeff,

    Welcome to MySwissAlps.

Unless you have fixed plans in Zurich, I’d recommend staying in Lucerne (https://www.myswissalps.com/town/lucerne/) for 2 nights and the remaining days in Interlaken (https://www.myswissalps.com/town/interlaken/).

There are direct trains from Zurich Airport to Lucerne if you are arriving via flights and the journey takes roughly 1 hour and 15 mins. From Lucerne, it is easier to plan excursions to Mt Pilatus (https://www.myswissalps.com/activity/pilatus/) and day trip to Zurich (https://www.myswissalps.com/town/zurich/). You can then take the scenic Lucerne-Interlaken Express to Interlaken (about 2 h journey) and use this as a base to explore the Jungfrau region (https://www.myswissalps.com/region/jungfrau-region/) and visit destinations such Grindelwald, Wengen and Lauterbrunnen.

Depending on your itinerary, you might want to consider getting a Swiss Travel Pass (https://www.myswissalps.com/travel-ticket/swiss-travel-pass/).

    Hope this gets you started.

    Regards,
    Anna

    Hi Anna,

Thank you for your prompt reply. Your suggested itinerary sounds great.   Unfortunately, our time is limited. We are arriving and departing from the Zurich airport, arriving mid-afternoon and departing early morning.  Therefore we decided to stay in Zurich and make it our base.

    Hi Jeff,

No problem! Spending 4 days in and near Zurich is a good choice. Here are suggestions for activities in and near the city, as well as a few trips further off:

Except for discounted cable car to Pilatus, all of the trips above will be free with the Swiss Travel Pass mentioned by Anna. That even goes for access to the St. Gallen monastery and library.

Of course, there are many more options. The section “Things to see and do in Zurich” of our Zurich town guide may be of help too: https://www.myswissalps.com/town/zurich/

    Does this get you started?

    Hi Annika,

Your message in addition to Anna’s gives us lots of options.  I also saw on the forum a trip to Rigi Kulm.
This will help us plan out trip.

    Thanks,

    Jeff
