Upgrade to 1st class for Interlaken-Lucerne with Jungfrau Travel Pass

Short summary – read this first

A traveler named Paul is planning a trip from Interlaken to Luzern after visiting the Jungfrau region. He wants to know if he can upgrade to 1st class on the Interlaken to Brienz section and buy a separate 1st class ticket for the Brienz to Luzern part. He seeks clarity on travel options and costs associated with these changes.

Key takeaways:
  • You can buy a 1st class upgrade for the Interlaken to Brienz segment if your Jungfrau Travel Pass (JTP) is 2nd class only.
  • For the Brienz to Luzern section, you'll need to purchase a separate 1st class point-to-point ticket as the JTP does not cover this journey.
  • The new Lucerne Travel Pass will be available from April 1st, which might be worth considering for future travelers in the area.

Returning to Luzern after visiting the Jungfrau region, I understand that my JTP entitles me to 2nd class travel as far as Brienz BUT what if I want to travel the whole journey to Luzern in 1st Class?
Could I just buy an upgrade as far as Brienz (JTP being 2nd class only) and then a 1st class point to point for the Brienz-Luzern section. Bearing in mind the sums involved I might just buy point to point 1st class for the whole journey(Interlaken-Brienz). Any thoughts? I guess that this one is probably for you again Roger, Merry Christmas!

    Hello again Paul

I cannot be absolutely sure (I would check with the Interlaken Ost booking office) but I think it would work to upgrade to first class on the Interlaken to Brienz section, and to buy a separate first class point-to-point for Brienz to Interlaken.

It is worth noting that both the Berner Oberland Pass (which does have a first class version) and the new Lucerne Travel Pass which is being introduced on April 1st (but no first class version) cover the whole of the Interlaken to Lucerne line.

Thank you modertor(s) for adding to my reply the website link to the Lucerne Travel Pass.

This link is very useful, and anyone spending any time next year in the Lucerne/Luzern area should study the material with care.   The coverage of minor mountain lines is especially impressive.

    Kind regards
    Roger

Many thanks Roger, informative and helpful as usual! I have also contacted the JTP and they suggest the same!

Roger, I asked the Jungfrau Travel Pass “AI” assistant about this earlier query of mine and thought that you may be interest in the response, see below!

The Jungfrau Travel Pass (JTP) gives you unlimited travel in 2nd class on certain routes, including Interlaken Ost to Brienz. If you would like to travel 1st class on the Interlaken Ost–Brienz section, you can purchase a 1st class upgrade for that segment. For the Brienz–Luzern segment, you would need to buy a separate 1st class point-to-point ticket.

Here’s how your travel would work:

    • Interlaken Ost → Brienz: Travel with your JTP (2nd class) or purchase a 1st class upgrade.
    • Brienz → Luzern: Buy a separate 1st class point-to-point ticket (JTP is not valid beyond Brienz).

The same logic applies if you travel in reverse (Luzern → Interlaken Ost):

Luzern → Brienz: Buy a 1st class point-to-point ticket.Brienz → Interlaken Ost: Use JTP (2nd class) or buy a 1st class upgrade for this section. Please note that the JTP does not cover the Brienz–Luzern section, so a ticket is always needed for this portion. The 1st class upgrade on the Interlaken–Brienz route is possible and commonly done.If you need official confirmation or have special requests, you can always reach out to Jungfraubahnen for advice.
