Lake Brienz and Thun, day trip from Lucerne

Short summary – read this first

Louise is planning a day trip to the Interlaken Region in early May, traveling from Luzern and visiting several attractions, including Giessbach Falls and Harder Kulm. She needs advice on the best way to get from Interlaken Ost to Thun and whether a visit to Thun is worthwhile after her other activities.

Key takeaways:
  • To get from Interlaken Ost to Thun, take bus 21 for a scenic drive, but the train route is faster if available.
  • During Louise's travel dates, trains between Spiez and Interlaken Ost will be under construction, so check for bus services.
  • Thun has many interesting places to explore, so it's worth visiting even if you arrive later in the day.

    Hello Moderators and others,

I have planned a day trip to the Interlaken Region in early May. My day looks like this:

Luzern to Brienz via train, explore town

Hop on boat to Giessbach Falls, off and explore

Hop on boat to Iseltwad, off and explore

Hop on boat to Interlaken Ost

    Off to explore Harder Kulm

    Train/bus to Interlaken West

Train / bus to Thun, explore

    Back to Luzern

    Here are my questions:

    1. If I want to go to Thun from Interlaken Ost, what is the best way to get there? and how long will it take? I assume I would need to go to Interlaken West first and then to Thun? can’t seem to find the 30 min ride from Interlaken West to Thun on SBB. Maybe I am inputting the wrong information. It is showing close to an hour instead of 30mins. Is it travel by bus?

    2. Will it be worth to visit Thun after Harder Kulm? I guess it will be around 5ish before we are even done . Are places/establishments close early?

I would have love to do a cruise on Lake Thun, but I don’t have time and the last cruise time will not fit into my current day.

    Any suggestions would be helpful.

    Thanks,

    Louise

The main line (BLS) railway runs Interlaken Ost – Interlaken West – Spiez – Thun, so to get from the Lake Brienz boat to Thun, switch from boat to train at Interlaken Ost and get a direct train to Thun. Later from Thun you can get a train to Luzern via Burgdorf

    Hi Louise,

This plan is feasible as a day trip but do take note of the boat schedules.

    1. To get from Interlaken Ost to Thun, you can take bus 21 from Interlaken Ost bus station (directly next to the train station). This bus traverse around the lake (Lake Thun) so is quite a scenic journey but it takes about 1 hour. Taking the train is faster. There are direct ICE trains from Interlaken Ost to Thun running a few times a day. Alternatively you can walk from Interlaken Ost to Interlaken West (or take a 5 mins bus trip) and the take a train to Thun (30 mins journey). The service between Interlaken West and Thun runs half hourly. http://www.myswissalps.com/interlaken/travel

    2. Thun is a nice town to explore. You can find more details here: http://www.myswissalps.com/thun

    Hi Anna,

I am having some difficulties finding the appropriate routes as mentioned in your reply.

On the SBB site, I inputted Interlaken Ost/West to Thun (e.g. 17:00 departure time) and it only shows the bus route. Even if I delete everything and only include ICE trains, it is not showing the train (30 mins) option that you mentioned. Perhaps the train only runs until a certain time?

Also, 1960man mention something about the BLS railway and even if I plug in my preferences, it doesn’t even show any routes available.

    What am I doing wrong?

BTW I inputted Interlaken Ost/West (both options) to Thun on May 4 departing after 17:00.

    Thanks for your help.

The normal service is as follows:

There are inter city trains at least every 1 hour throughout the day direct Interlaken Ost (depart on the hour xx.00) – Spiez – Thun – Bern. During most of the day there is also a direct inter city on the half hour from Interlaken Ost as well.

However, this will be affected by engineering work 30 April – May 8, when no trains will run Interlaken – Spiez

You are not doing anything wrong.

The Interlaken – Spiez railway is closed for works 30 April – 4 May (see copy of timetable announcement below), so there will be no trains on 4 May.

Take the replacement bus service or, a better option use the regular frequent bus 21 Interlaken – Thun via the north shore of the Thunersee – very scenic

Interrupted service Spiez – Interlaken Ost

Interrupted rail services between Spiez and Interlaken Ost.

This is due to engineering work.

    The restriction lasts from 30.04.23, 04:00 until 08.05.23, 04:00.

Lines RE and PE are affected.

Expect longer journey times and cancellations.

Passengers travelling between Spiez and Interlaken Ost please use the remplacement bus service.

It is not possible to transport bicycles on the replacement buses.

Please follow the signs to the departure point of thr replacement service.

    Please observe the local signals.

Further information is available at the info point .

Further information is available on site .

Thanks, Anna. I guess your suggestions would have worked for me, if my dates were not during the construction time.

Thanks, 1960man. That explains alot of things. I thought I was doing something wrong.

I guess we will take the bus 21 as suggested by Anna and yourself. It could been a nice scenic drive to the end of a long day.

    Regards,

    Louise
