Walk Lauterbrunnen-Trümmelbach Falls combined with a Schilthorn visit

Short summary – read this first

Michelle is planning a day trip from Lauterbrunnen to see Trummelbach Falls and then head to Mürren and Schilthorn. She wants to avoid backtracking and is considering skipping the falls if the hike to Stechelberg is equally enjoyable. She appreciates tips on the best route and timing.

Key takeaways:
  • After visiting Trummelbach Falls, you can walk to Stechelberg, which is about 2 kilometers south of the falls.
  • The direct cable car from Stechelberg to Mürren takes just four minutes, making it a quick option to continue your journey.
  • To avoid backtracking, consider hiking or taking the narrow-gauge railway from Mürren to Grütschalp and then the cable car down to Lauterbrunnen.

Hello, I am interested in walking to the trummelbach falls from Lauterbrunnen. I was thinking of  walking to the train station near stechelberg after seeing the falls to then go to Murren up to Schilthorn. Would I be back tracking the valley to do this?  I could skip Trummelback if the walk to stechelberg is just as nice and about the same distance. Don’t want to spend to much Time in the valley if I do both in one day.
    Thank you
    Michelle

    Hello Michelle.

I would help if you could find a map covering both Lauterbrunnen and Murren.

Lauterbrunnen RAILWAY station is at the north end of the village.  From that station railway trains go to Interlaken and to Kleine Scheidegg via Wengen.  Directly across the road from the railway station there is the cable car station for the cable car up to Grutschalp.

If you walk south through Lauterbrunnen village the Trummelbach Falls are on the left (East) side of the road about 1.5 kilometres beyond the village.

After you have enjoyed the falls continue to walk south along the road towards Stechelberg.  After about two kilometres there is a very large CABLE CAR station on the right (West) side of the road.  From this cable car station separate cable car lines go up to Gimmelwald and to Murren.

If you want to go up Schilthorn you take the new (very steep!) cable car direct to Murren, and change there and again at Birg.

There is no ‘back tracking’, and you could certainly visit Trummelbach, Murren and Schilthorn in the same day.

(Note the 141 bus runs every 30 minutes along the road from Lauterbrunnen to Stechelberg.)

    Kind regards
    Roger

Ok, I think I got it. From the Lauterbrunnen train station about a 7 min walk to Staubbachfall  viewpoint, Walk to Trummelbach falls about 45 minutes, walk to Schilthornbahn another 35 min walking south to a direct cable car to Murren , then continue as you described. Is that all correct?   Do you know how long that direct cable car ride is?

    Hello again Michelle

Yes, you have correctly understood the geography of the area going south from Lauterbrunnen railway station.

The DIRECT cable car from Stechelberg to Murren takes just four minutes.  (It is also possible to use the older cable cars via Gimmelwald.  That journey takes twelve minutes.)

    Best wishes

    Roger

Hi Michelle—If you want to avoid backtracking on your journey from Mürren back to Lauterbrunnen, you can hike or take the narrow-gauge railway from Mürren to Grütschalp. At Grütschalp, you transfer to the Bergbahn cable car for a 4-minute ride down to Lauterbrunnen.
