Lucerne-Interlaken Express – class upgrade and seat reservation

Short summary – read this first

A traveler named Sumit is trying to reserve a seat for the Lucerne-Interlaken Golden Pass Express after purchasing a Bernese Oberland pass and a first-class upgrade. They encountered issues because they couldn't find a seat reservation option and are seeking guidance on how to secure a seat.

Key takeaways:
  • Seat reservations for the Lucerne-Interlaken Express should be made on the Zentralbahn website, not on SBB.
  • The Bernese Oberland Pass is valid for travel on the Lucerne-Interlaken Express, so you can use it for your journey.
  • If you're having issues finding seats in first class, check for availability in second class as well, as there may be options there.

    Hello,

I have purchased a Bernese oberland pass for 2nd class. I believe the lucerne-interlaken golden pass express is covered in this pass. I was interested in travelling first class so i also purchased a point to point class upgrade  . When i try booking a seat reservation for a specific train i dont see any option to reserve a seat. only option is to purchase a ticket.

can anybody guide me how do i only reserve a seat for this train?

    thank you.

I think it might be the same as when I booked the Glacier and Bernina Expresses.  The seat reservations actually have to be made on the website of the company running the trains, not on SBB.

I think that this is the site for the Lucerne – Interlaken train.

    Hi Sumit,

Seat reservation on the Lucerne-Interlaken Express is not necessary but possible. You can book the seats directly on the Zentralbahn website. You can find the link here: https://www.myswissalps.com/activity/goldenpass/ (please scroll down to the section: Other Websites of Interest).

To confirm, yes, the Berner Oberland Pass (https://www.myswissalps.com/travel-ticket/berner-oberland-pass/) is valid for travel on the Lucerne-Interlaken Express.

    Best regards,

    Anna

Hello, having read the above comments, I tried to make reservations (in 1st class) for the Golden Pass Express from Montreux to Interlaken, but was only offered three carriages with no seats available – every seat shown had a cross on it.  Does that mean there are no seats available in first class on that train, or do they keep some seats free for people just turning up on the day?  Does anyone know? Thank you for any information you can give.

    Hi Swissophile,

Yes, it could well mean that seats in 1st class are sold out. Perhaps there might still be seats in 2nd class.

    Regards,

    Anna

Thanks Anna.  I checked  second class and the same applied.  I am being provided with a first class transfer by Inghams and had hoped to ‘do’ the Golden Pass line but I think we’ll probably go via Visp and Spiez instead. I know the Lausanne route is very scenic but we try to avoid changing trains in Bern if we possibly can.  It can be a bit of a nightmare..

    Hello Swissophil.

I am not surprised that you cannot get a reservation on the through Montreux to Interlaken express.   The new variable gauge trains  eliminate the changes at Zweisimmen and Spiez.  And all the little boys and girls (and the not so little – like me) want to play with the latest high-tec toy on the ‘Gigantic Train Set’ which is the Swiss Railway System!

Your alternative route via VISP sounds brilliant.  I learnt a long time ago to avoid, if at all possible, changing at Bern!

    Happy travelling

    Roger.

Thanks Roger. I’m glad you approve of our proposed route. We love the Swiss transport system, as you obviously do, and I really enjoy planning our trips in advance, often including postbus journeys to remote places. Oh for such facilities at home !
