Lucerne vs Zurich as a base town for 10 days

Short summary – read this first

A traveler named Tracihorst is planning a 10-day trip to Switzerland, with an apartment booked in Zurich. They are debating whether to base themselves in Lucerne instead to facilitate day trips, and they're seeking advice on the best location for their travels.

Key takeaways:
  • Consider staying in Lucerne as it is closer to many famous mountains, which is ideal for outdoor activities.
  • You can still spend a couple of nights in Zurich at the start or end of your trip to enjoy both cities.
  • If you're planning several day trips, check the timetable for travel times between both locations for better planning.
  • If you want a more central location, look into other nearby towns for additional base options.
  • The Swiss Travel Pass is a great way to save on transportation costs across the country.

We are going to be in Switzerland for 10 days. We have an apartment booked in Zurich but someone said we should base out of Lucerne instead. Our plan is to take day trips maybe one overnight to enjoy all of Switzerland. Thoughts?

    Hi Tracihorst, welcome to MySwissAlps!

Well, Lucerne (myswissalps.com/lucern e) is closer to many of Switzerland’s famous mountains than Zurich (myswissalps.com/zurich). So if mountain areas are your main interest, staying in Lucerne makes more sense indeed. The timetable will help you find traveling times to and from both towns: myswissalps.com/timeta ble. You could spend one or two nights in Zurich at either the beginning or the end of your stay, in order to enjoy both locations.

There are more options if you’re looking for a centrally located town: https://www.myswissalp s.com/centraltownsalps.
