Luggage on Swiss trains – room for large suitcases

Short summary – read this first

CindyMM is planning a trip in June with 8 adults, flying into Zurich and traveling to Lucerne, Wengen, Zermatt, and back to Zurich. She wants advice on whether it's feasible to bring their large suitcases on the trains or if they should use the Express luggage service for convenience.

Key takeaways:
  • There is enough space on trains for large suitcases, so you can travel with them comfortably.
  • Using the Express luggage service of SBB is more convenient, but it can be pricey depending on your budget.
  • Limiting suitcase size can make handling them on public transport easier.

Question on what people normal do with their suitcases for train travel. We are 8 adults traveling in June 2023 flying into Zurich and then going to Lucerne (3 nights) Wengen ( 7 nights) Zermatt (3 nights) and back to Zurich (2 nights). We will all have probably a large suitcase each and a carry on. Is it feasible to bring the luggage with us on the trains between locations or do people use the Express luggage services to send suitcases (same day seems convenient but pricey). Thanks. Just curious what everyone normally does. We can manage our suitcases ourselves just wondering enough room on trains for large suitcases – we will be getting 1st class train tickets if that matters. Thanks

Hi CindyMM and welcome to MySwissAlps.com!

You can travel with your suitcases, there will be a place for them on the train. Some tourists prefer to use the luggage service of SBB, which is more comfortable for sure. It depends on you what you prefer any on your budget.

You can read about the luggage on the Swiss trains and also about the luggage service here: http://www.myswissalps.com/train/practical/luggage.

Hi CindyMM! My husband and I limit the size of our suitcases to 24” when we travel as we have found that that is the max size we are comfortable handling, especially when using public transport. That said, we never had any real issues traveling on the SBB (second class) with our luggage. I think there was one train during our trip that was more crowded and we stood with our luggage off to the side of one of the doors until enough people got off at another stop that we could find a place to sit with our suitcases.
