Traveling to Zermatt – how to visit the Matterhorn

Short summary – read this first

A traveler is planning a family trip to see the Matterhorn from Vevey with two young children. They have the Swiss Travel Pass and are looking for advice on how to reach Zermatt, what to do with kids on their day trip, and any additional ticket needs. They want to make the most of their visit.

Key takeaways:
  • Plan your train trip from Vevey to Zermatt using the Swiss Travel Pass, which covers train travel and offers discounts on mountain tickets.
  • For the best views of the Matterhorn, consider visiting either Gornergrat or Klein Matterhorn, as Zermatt is primarily a viewpoint destination.
  • The Swiss Travel Pass allows kids to travel for free, making it a cost-effective option for family visits.

    Hi,

We are staying at Vevey with two children 1oy & 7y.

Q1; Please advise on how to get to Matterhorn? We have a swiss travel pass.

Q2; What all is there to do with children on a day trip and what tickets do we need to buy.

    Thanks.

    G

    Hi Shivpuri,

You can plan the train trip from Vevey to Zermatt here.
You don’t need to buy any tickets as far as Zermatt if you have the Swiss Travel Pass (and Swiss Family Card for the kids).

You can’t actually visit the Matterhorn – your options are to visit other mountains in Zermatt for the best view points. The 2 options are Gornergrat and Klein Matterhorn/Glacier Paradise.

The Swiss Travel Pass gets your 50% off the ticket price to either mountain above (kids travel free)

A fantastic beautiful town to stroll through and visit many places and beautiful shops. The views of the Matterhorn are fantastic and can be seen from the Klein Matterhorn or Gornergrat. BUT if you want to visit the Matterhorn the once-in-a-lifetime experience is to take a helicopter tour. you will never regret it.
