Both lovely choices with both towns situated on lakes too. Montreux on the shores of Lake Geneva and Lugano on the shores of Lake Lugano.

Thanks Yolanda. We have a preliminary itinerary that goes like this:
Day 1 : Arrive Zurich-stay that night
Day2 : early train to St Moritz-stay 1 night
Day 3 : First Glacier Express to Zermatt
Day 4 and 5 : stay in Zermatt (3 nights)
Day 6 : Take train to Grindelwald
Day 7 and 8 : stay in Grindelwald (3 nights)
Day 9 : Take train to Montreux/Vevey
Day 10: Stay in Montreux/Vevey (2 nights)
Day 11 : Take train to Lucern
Day 12 and 13 : Stay in Lucern
Day 14 : Leave Lucern for Innsbrook
Any other ides or comments anyone has are welcome. As I said this is preliminary.

As an alternative, you can also consider travelling from Zermatt to Montreux, than Montreux to Grindelwald via the GoldenPass Express train (https://www.myswissalps.com/activity/goldenpass/), then Grindelwald to Lucerne.
Also, you can easily plan a day trip to Lugano (https://www.myswissalps.com/town/lugano/) from Lucerne. The train journey takes about 2.5 hours each way, which I think is doable if you start your day early.
