hi, I am trying to figure out the best pass to get for 2 adults and 4 kids (2, 11, 12, 13)
for the one day travel pass – it seems Mt. Rigi and Stoos is free plus most of the boat rides. (besides others)
However, is this only if you have the half fare card? otherwise there is no discount?
Also, what about the kids? would i have to buy a junior card for them?
As an aside – when you click on the overview for the pass it says you can only but with a half fare card. http://www.myswissalps.com/on edaytravelpass
but on the details tab it shows how you can buy without the half fare card http://www.myswissalps.com/on edaytravelpass/details
though one is referred to as one day travel pass and one as saver day pass
thanks

Until a couple of years ago, the one day travel pass for Switzerland was a perk of having a Swiss half fare card, in other words you could either use your card to buy occasional individual tickets at half price, or if you were aiming to do a lot of travel in one day (eg for roving around the country as a tourist) you could get the day pass.
Now , you can buy a one day travel pass even if you don’t have a half fare card, although half fare card holders get a discount.
Removed userParticipant72625 posts14 June 2018 at 22:26:25 #888304saver pass can be bought with or without half fare card
if u buy in advance .. it can be as low as 29CHF or 44CHF for 2nd class.
even for saver tickets u get discount with half-fare card. When u buy half-fare card .. you can get the free family card that covers kids travel

You have to have the Swiss Half Fare Card to use the One Day Travel Pass.
You don’t need the Swiss Half Fare Card to buy the Saver Day Pass (but it reduces the purchase cost). You can see what routes are covered by those day passes on the PDF map: https://www.myswissalp s.com/onedaytravelpass /validity
If you don’t have the Swiss Half Fare Card you’ll need to buy a Junior Travel Card.
Removed userParticipant72625 posts15 June 2018 at 14:21:05 #888306So you’re saying that i would not get the discounts if i don’t have the half fare card as well.
and thank you for such an amazing site. So much information so clearly laid out….
Its really helping in planning this trip
Removed userParticipant72625 postsRemoved userParticipant72625 posts15 June 2018 at 17:05:24 #888308sorry, now I am more confused.
from the map, it seems that with the saver day pass almost all that is free with the swiss travel pass is free as well – all the boat rides, stoos, rigi.
Schilthorn is 50% instead of free. not sure about Brunni. Titlis, Pilatus is 50% off
So my question is, is the half fare card needed to get the free price for the boat rides, stoos and rigi? and the 50% off the others – or will the saver day pass cover that on its own?
or you cant use the saver day pass on its own at all?
We are renting a car so i only need the discounts on boats and cable cars/gondolas/funiculars…
thank you
Removed userParticipant72625 posts16 June 2018 at 7:06:06 #888309You can use the Saver Day Pass on it’s own yes. It covers almost the same areas/routes as the Swiss Travel Pass but less discounts (or none) up to many mountains.
The best rail pass depends on knowing exactly what trips you are making first during your entire trip, then comparing your options of rail passes. https://www.myswissalp s.com/train/ticketspas ses/practical/choosera ilpass
Almost always, for car drivers, the Swiss Half Fare Card is the best option. https://www.myswissalp s.com/swisshalffarecar d.
Then if you have a day that has a lot of travel (and that travel is covered by the Saver Day Pass) it might be worth it to get it for a day.Hope that makes sense. 🙂
Removed userParticipant72625 posts17 June 2018 at 6:09:04 #888310thank you for your help and answers,
sorry, i keep on asking questions but i want to be clear on this. I tried finding the info on my own but couldnt find the exact answers.
are any of these free with the one day save pass without the half fare card?
Mt. Rigi
Brunni
Stoos
boats – Lake Lucerne, Lake brienz…
thank you very much
Removed userParticipant72625 posts17 June 2018 at 14:07:34 #888311Just to note the rail pass names as they are different rail passes
- One Day Travel Pass: https://www.myswissalp s.com/onedaytravelpass
- Saver Day Pass https://www.myswissalp s.com/onedaytravelpass /details
You can find maps of the coverage area on our web page here: https://www.myswissalp s.com/onedaytravelpass /details click on the two links under More on Other Websites.
The Saver Day Pass (without the half fare card) covers Stoos, Mt. Rigi, Brunni and those (and other) lake cruises yes.

I looked at those maps, but i wasnt sure if it was only applicable with the half fare card.
So thank you for your direct answer.
If we would do those mountains, and the schilthorn, would we be missing out on “the alps experience” by not doing the usual tourist ones?
we’re only in Switzerland for 3 days as part of a larger trip and we’re trying to stay within a budget.
thanks again.
I’m really so impressed with this site. That you answer everyone’s questions amd with such patience
Removed userParticipant72625 posts17 June 2018 at 17:31:57 #888313Stoos and Brunni aren’t big mountains and not what most would consider the “Alps”.
But if you are looking for the big mountains that are popular with tourists, Schilthorn is a good one. I think those 3 (Stoos, Rigi and Schilthorn) would be a nice variety for you.
Removed userParticipant72625 posts18 June 2018 at 2:06:34 #888314thanks.
I’m not specifically looking for the mountains that all the tourists go to (which is why Titlis, pilatus and Jungfrau is not on the list.
I am looking for beautiful views and the experience of being in the alps (without spending tons of money just because all tourists do) and travelling with a baby and kids limits the hiking we can do.
the problem is, that the info thats easy to find, is what all the tourists are posting.
I know about Stoos from you and another local blogger.
thats why i really appreciate all the input you have given.
Removed userParticipant72625 posts18 June 2018 at 6:22:40 #888315No worries, I get it.
But don’t miss out on some mountains – they are popular with tourists for a reason. 🙂 Jungfraujoch is very expensive I agree.
Everywhere will be somewhat busy in the summer. Stoos is a cute little town with some nice hikes in the summer and is great for the funicular ride up. I think Schilthorn would be my pick for 1 big mountain trip.
Stanserhorn is another nice option that is near Lucerne and not quite as busy as the “big 3” nearby: Rigi, Titlis and Pilatus https://www.myswissalp s.com/stanserhorn

Removed userParticipant72625 posts27 June 2018 at 2:46:15 #888316thanks for the info.
running the numbers – if we want to go to the schilthorn, (105 pp) then in the end it is only a little more expensive to get the swiss travel pass and not sweat every detail of how much it will be.
were doing 2 days near Lauterbrunnen
the third day we are driving and spending the day in Lucerne or Engelberg. then driving onto zurich to be there for our morning flight the next day.
for the mountains that are free with the swiss travel pass – what order would you recommend them? it would be nice if we could squeeze in 2, but not sure if we will have time or not
rigi, stoos, stanserhorn, brunni
(btw – on your link to purchase the stp with happy rail – it shows that the stanserhorn is a 50% discount and not 100%)
the one day saver pass would seem to make the most sense if we would spend the majority of time in Lucerne.
Removed userParticipant72625 posts27 June 2018 at 6:34:21 #888317If I were choosing 2 of those mountains, it would be Rigi and Stanserhorn.
https://www.myswissalp s.com/rigi
https://www.myswissalp s.com/stanserhornOur link for the Swiss Travel Pass (https://www.myswissalp s.com/swisstravelpass/ validity) shows Stanserhorn is free and it is free for sure.
Do you mean HappyRail’s website shows it as 50% off only?Removed userParticipant72625 posts27 June 2018 at 6:46:05 #888318Yes, happy rail shows the discount at 50%
Removed userParticipant72625 posts27 June 2018 at 10:29:20 #888319Perhaps their website has an error somewhere or they haven’t updated the entire site.
I just checked their web page for Swiss Travel Pass inclusions and it shows free as well: https://www.happyrail. com/en/swiss-pass-railpass-switzerland#swiss-travel-pass-what-is-included
Stanserhorn is free with the Swiss Travel Pass. 🙂
