Short summary – read this first

A traveler is exploring the scenic Bernina and Golden Pass routes from Lucerne to Montbovon and is seeking advice on the best route from Spiez to Zermatt. They are considering whether to take the old tunnel via Kanderstag and Goppenstein or the new tunnel, weighing the scenery against travel time.

Key takeaways:
  • Choose the old tunnel route for stunning mountain views and the aerial Rhone valley experience, although it's slower.

  • The journey from Spiez to Zermatt via Kanderstag and Brig might be worth the extra time for beautiful scenery.

    Dear find,

We r doing Bernina route and Golden pass route from lucerne to Montbovon. After seeing these two scenic routes, what will be our route from Spiez to Zermatt ? Via Kanderstag, Goppenstein (old tunnel) or via new tunnel?

    Go whichever way you like.

The old route is slower and you see a few more mountains plus an ‘aerial’ view of the Rhone valley as you descend from Goppenstein to Brig, the new tunnel is faster and shorter as it comes out at Visp, cutting out the Brig – Visp section of the MGB line to Zermatt.

How come you are stopping at Montbovon and then going to Zermatt from Spiez?

If you are travelling the ‘GoldenPass‘ route Luzern – Montbovon, there are two things to consider:

    • Luzern – Interlaken – Zweisimmen isn’t really the true ‘GoldenPass’ which is only the MOB section Zweisimmen – Montreux
    • Montbovon – Montreux is about the most scenic section of the true Golden Pass

    Hi Arnabghosh,

For scenery I’d take a train via Goppenstein and Brig as 1960man says. But his suggestion to just continue to Montreux is a good one as well. Then take a train to Visp from there.

I think the Bernina line is the most beautiful one of the options discussed here. As said, if you go to Montbovon anyway, it would make sense to continue to Montreux to complete the Golden Pass line. That’s what I would do. If you want to go back to Spiez, then traveling via Kandersteg is worth the extra hour in my opinion.
