Rain virtually everyday, everywhere in Switzerland

Short summary – read this first

A couple, Skshah3988, is worried about the rainy weather in Switzerland during their planned trip in mid-June, covering Lucerne, Interlaken/Lauterbrunnen, and Montreux. With hotels booked and only three days left before departure, they seek advice on whether to change their itinerary due to the forecasts of rain and thunderstorms.

Key takeaways:
  • Don't cancel your plans; Swiss weather can be unpredictable but often includes breaks in the rain.
  • Pack a raincoat and waterproof shoes to stay comfortable while enjoying outdoor activities.
  • The Swiss Travel Pass can offer flexibility; consider day trips to sunnier areas like Ticino if the weather is uncooperative.

Perhaps I underestimated the unpredictability of the weather in Switzerland in Mid-June.

My wife and I (like most people traveling to Switzerland) have significant outdoors activities we planned throughout Lucerne, Interlaken/Lauterbrennen, and Montreux (including Lavuax Wine Region and Glacier 3000).

However, the weather is showing rain or thunderstorms literally everyday. I know its too early to tell, however is there any idea on whether we’ll get any sunshine in June? Or is it always rain, rain, rain? Not sure if I should reconsider my itinerary, especially since all hotels are booked and we’re leaving in 3 days.

    Hi Skshah3988,

There’s no need to reconsider your itinerary, but it’s always useful to have some backup plans for bad weather. Note that the forecast for next Thursday and Friday predicts wonderful sunny weather, but any forecast more than 3 days in advance is useless in Switzerland. Please see http://www.myswissalps.com/we ather.

Even if the forecast keeps predicting rain every day, then it rarely rains all day long. It could just be an hour, or not even during day time. Of course rain for 24 hours is possible too, but less likely. Precipitation is an essential ingredient of Swiss weather, and much needed for the white capped mountain tops and green meadows. It’s very unlikely to spoil an entire holiday if you adapt your plans to the daily weather forecast.

    Have fun!

We are here in Switzerland right now and it has been raining on and off for two days. Yesterday we did the First Glider in the rain at First Grindelwald. We just put on rain jackets and adapted our plans a bit. Everything is still beautiful. We also did Staubbach Falls and Trummelbach Falls today in the rain. You just have to adapt. We are having the time of our lives here. Rain, rain go away, but if not it’s still beautiful!

Hello, my family and I will be coming to the area on Sunday. Would you mind advising on what to wear during the day for activities outdoors? We aren’t used to the climate in Switzerland.

    Thank you!

I totally agree with Shatpl. We also are here now and therain is not spoiling things at all. It has not rained all day and we have made the most of seeing what we could in the sunshine but made sure took waterproofs and footwear so we could still cope outside. Unlike a beach holiday rain did not stop play which is the bonus of this country

    Hello Angelitamama,

It’s recommendable to have a raincoat with you if you plan to be outdoors in the rain, often more practical than an umbrella. And good waterproof shoes for me personally are also essential, as having wet feet results in feeling cold rather quick (for me this is).

An extra layer is also always recommendable, just in case.

    Best,
    Steph

For what it’s worth, sometimes when it is raining pretty well everywhere north of the Alps, it isn’t bad south of the Alps. So if you have a STP you might want to consider a day trip to the Ticino ! I see that your accommodations are all booked and that you are leaving in three days. Sorry the weather didn’t turn out as you were hoping !

Pack for layers of clothing. The colder it gets, you add a fleece jacket. Warmer, take it off. Bring ski hat, gloves. Snow boots if you have children who want to play in the snow. Rain jacket.
