Reservation cancellation for Golden Pass

Short summary – read this first

A traveler, Pumpkinpie17, is planning to make reservations for the Golden Pass Train on two different dates but is unsure about cancellation options. They also have questions about visiting Aare Gorge, Harder Kulm, and taking a boat trip on Lake Brienz from Luzern.

Key takeaways:
  • Seat reservations on the Golden Pass are not mandatory, so you can board without them.
  • The Swiss Travel Pass covers train and boat rides, but you still need to buy entry tickets for Aare Gorge and Harder Kulm.
  • You can store luggage at both Meiringen and Interlaken Ost train stations.

    Hello,

We would like to make reservations for the Golden Pass Train for 2 different dates, as we are not sure about which particular day we will board the train. After making the reservation, is it possible to cancel the reservation for a particular date? If yes, what is the process?

    Thank you.

    Hi Pumpkinpie17,

This depends on where you bought the seat reservations from. Different resellers have different policy regarding cancellations and refunds.

For your information, seat reservation on the Golden Pass is not compulsory.

Thank you Anna for your reply.

    Hi Anna,

I have few more questions: We have plans to visit Interlaken, Grindelwald areas. We will come from Luzern to Interlaken and planning to visit Aare Gorge, take a boat trip in lake Brienz, visiting Harder Kulm in Interlaken. We will visit these places and heading to Grindelwald.

    My questions are:

    1. How long does it take to reach Aare Gorge from Interlaken or from Luzern and by which train?

    2. Are those train ride and entry ticket to Aare Gorge covered by Swiss Travel pass?

    3. Is it feasible to finish all activities in one day after coming from Luzern a. visiting Aare Gorge and b. boat trip in lake Brienz and or visiting Harder Kulm?

    4. Is there any luggage storage in interlaken or in Meiringen station?

    Thanks in advance.

    Hi Pumpkinpie17,

Depending on how much time you spend at each destination, it might be possible to combine a trip to the Aare Gorge, Harder Kulm and a boat trip on Lake Brienz (Interlaken to Brienz) in one day.

To get to the Aare Gorge (Aareschlucht) from Lucerne, take the train to Meiringen, then bus to Aareschlucht West. The journey takes about 1.5 hour. From Aareschlucht to Interlaken Ost, the journey takes roughly 50 minutes. The Harder Kulm funicular is located within walking distance of the train station and boat landing stage where you can board the boat to Brienz. The boat trip from Interlaken Ost to Brienz takes about 1.5 hour. From Brienz you can take a train back to Lucerne. With careful planning, I think you will have enough time to spend at each destination. Please use the SBB timetable to check train schedules and plan your journey.

With the Swiss Travel Pass, train and boat rides are free. The only tickets you need are the admission tickets to the Aare Gorge and the funicular tickets to Harder Kulm (both discounted with the STP).

Hope this helps you plan your day trip.

    Regards,

    Anna

Thank you very much Anna for all the details you have provided.

Only thing I need to get some information about the luggage storage at Interlaken OST or in Meiringen station?

If we will come from Luzern to Aare Gorge directly, then need to keep luggage at Meiringen station. If we come from Interlaken OST, then keep luggage in storage in Interlaken OST station.

    Thank you

    Hi Pumpkinpie17,

There are luggage lockers at both Meiringen and Interlaken Ost train stations.

Meiringen is a more compact station than Interlaken Ost so using the luggage lockers there would be less stressful IMO
