Rhaetian Railway: covered by Swiss Travel Pass?

Short summary – read this first

A couple plans to travel on the Rhaetian Railway in the Rhine Gorge during a day trip from Luzern in August. They are looking for information on whether their journey is covered by the Swiss Travel Pass and if reservations are needed for the train. They want to make sure they have all the details sorted for their trip.

Key takeaways:
  • The Swiss Travel Pass covers travel on the Rhaetian Railway, so you can enjoy your trip without worrying about extra costs.
  • Reservations are not usually needed for regular trains, but if you choose to travel on the Glacier Express, a reservation is mandatory and is not included with the Swiss Travel Pass.
  • Check the SBB timetable for convenient planning of your train journeys.

We would like to travel on the Rhaetian Railway in the Rhine Gorge. I have found reservations for Chur through the Gorge. Is any of this covered by a Swiss Travel Pass? Are reservations necessary for the train? We are 2 seniors traveling ihe entire month of August. This would be a day trip from Luzern. Thank you!

    Hello GandP,

For the most part , reservations are not typically required for trains here in Switzerland. More details here:

That said, the Rhine Gorge-Chur section is actually part of the Glacier Express route, which if you are wanting to travel on the Glacier Express panoramic train – purchase of a seat reservation is compulsory.

You can read all about the Glacier Express here – the route, tickets etc:

Of course, you can also travel on the regular trains too (Disentis and Chur are indeed part of the Rhaetian Railways coverage area: https://www.rhb.ch/en/service-souvenirs/rail-network).

Your travel either way would be covered by the Swiss Travel Pass and as mentioned, there’s no need for reservations, unless are traveling that section by Glacier Express. Reservations for the Glacier Express are not covered by your Swiss Travel Pass.

So nice you will be here for a month. If you need purchase options for your Swiss Travel Pass, you can find details below. Also, if you navigate to the “validity” tab, you can also view the Swiss Travel Pass coverage map:

Do use the very handy SBB timetable to plan all your journeys whilst here 🙂

    Kind regards,

    Yolanda
