Rosenlaui Glacier Gorge too far from Wengen?

Short summary – read this first

A traveler named Jers and her husband are planning a two-week trip to Switzerland in September, flying into Zurich. They will visit Mt. Titlis and Rhine Falls, then spend 10 days in Wengen focusing on the Jungfrau Region's mountains and lakes. They seek advice on visiting the Rosenlaui Glacier Gorge on a day trip from Wengen and have several questions about the Swiss Travel Pass.

Key takeaways:
  • You can reach the Rosenlaui Glacier Gorge in about 1.5 hours from Wengen via Interlaken and Meiringen, making it a feasible day trip.
  • It's best to buy the Swiss Travel Pass at the airport if you’re worried about flight delays; it stays valid for 15 days starting from the purchase date.
  • With a first-class Swiss Travel Pass, you can book a Prestige Class seat on the Golden Pass train with just an additional reservation fee of CHF 35.
  • Seat reservations on the Golden Pass trains are binding and non-refundable, so book as early as possible.

    Hello All,

My husband and I will be in Switzerland for 2 weeks in September. Fly in and out of Zurich, first 2 days visit Mt. Titlis, and Rhine Falls, then onto our Wengen hotel for 10 days. We will be doing popular mountains, lakes & waterfalls in Jungfrau Region mostly. I know it takes extra time to just get out of Wengen, but to me it’s worth it.

We will purchase the 15-day First Class Swiss Travel Pass. Thank you very much for being patient with all my questions.

#1 – Is the Rosenlaui Glacier Gorge too far for me to visit in one day from Hotel Silberhorn in Wengen? If I can make it, what transportation/route would I take to expedite the trip? If I can’t make it, is there another similar Gorge or similar activity closer that I can make in one day? I plan to do Trummelback Falls.

#2-Would it be advisable to purchase the Swiss Travel Pass on the day of Arrival since our flight could possibly be delayed a day or two? If

purchased sooner, and our flight was delayed by a couple of days, would the STP still be good for the total of 15 days once we did finally arrive?

Or, do they start counting the 15 days from the Original start date?

#3 -I know you have to have a first class ticket on GoldenPass Express (Interlaken Ost to Montreaux) to be able to buy a Prestige class ticket. Would my First Class STP Ticket cover that requirement to then buy Prestige class tickets? I believe it’s CHF 35 to upgrade, or is that the Seat Reservation price?

#4-Do you need to be in possession of a STP before making Prestige Seat reservations? If so, I would worry that the Prestige Class seats (or preferred seats) might get Sold Out once I got there (in September?) I’d prefer to make the seat reservations sooner to be safe.

#5-How lenient is the GoldenPass Express if you make a reservation, then have to cancel or if you re-schedule? Any fees?

Thank you very, very much for your time and knowledge.

    Warm Regards, Jers

    Hi Jers,

    Welcome to MySwissAlps.

Don’t let the fact that you are staying in Wengen deter you from plans based on being a bit further. (I would be a bit more concerned if staying in Murren, but not Wengen). Its only about 13-15 min. down to Lauterbrunnen from Wengen. (Make sure to sit on the left of train on the way down for a spectacular view (photo op) of the valley to where you are headed). Kleine Scheidegg is about 20 from Wengen by train. (Or you can take the gondola from Wengen up to Mannlichen. From there you can either hike down to Kleine Scheidegg, or take another cable car right down into Grindelwald. Many options there. Once in Lauterbrunnen, it’s 20 min to Interlaken Ost. Many options there as well, including train to Meirringen. That will get you close to where you are inquiring about, the Rosenlaui Glacier Gorge. Looks like a bus ride from there. All told looks like a bit over an hour+ to get there. At the moment it appears to be temporarily closed (according to Google maps). Keep hour eye on that as you continue making plans. If it remains closed for any reason, there is another gorge just a few stops beyond Meirringen, Aare Gorge. Or Aareschlucht, which seems comparable to the Rosenlaui Glacier Gorge, and a bit closer. Wengen is a beautiful village. Very scenic, relatively quiet in Sept, and its also car free. You should enjoy it.

As far as other questions about the STPass, I believe it is a good way to go since you are planning day trips from the Jungfrau region. I hope this gets you started in some way. Have fun planning and enjoy your trip.

    Regards,

    Danielsan

    Hi Jers,

    1. A day trip from Wengen to the Rosenlaui Glacier is certainly possible. A convenient route would be to take the train to Grindelwald or Meiringen then switch to a PostAuto bus that will bring you directly to the entrance of the gorge. You can check schedules on http://www.myswissalps.com/timetable. Just key in Rosenlaui, Gletscherschluct as your end destination.

    2. You will need to specify a start date at the point of sale when you purchase the Swiss Travel Pass online. If you are concerned about flight delays, it might be a good option to purchase the Swiss Travel Pass at the airport on arrival. You can also purchase the Swiss Travel Pass from any SBB train station. Purchase options online are available here: http://www.myswissalps.com/swisstravelpass/price

    3. Traveling on the Golden Pass in the Prestige class requires a 1st class ticket plus an additional reservation supplement of CHF 35 per person. If you have a 1st class Swiss Travel Pass, all you need is a seat reservation. You can find information on how to book your seat here: http://www.myswissalps.com/goldenpass/tickets

    4. You can book your seats on the Golden Pass train up to a few months in advance, even without a valid ticket or Swiss Travel Pass. Seats in the Prestige Class are limited so best to book as early as possible.

    5. Confirmed seat reservations on the Golden Pass trains are usually binding and non-refundable. You can check the MOB website for the full terms and conditions regarding this.

Hope this provide the answers you’re looking for. Let us know if you need more info.

    Regards,

    Anna

Quite the opposite. Please remember that the whole Interlaken – Jungfrau area is smaller than New York city!

Rosenlaui is easily reached in 1.5 hours from Wengen via Interlaken and Meiringen. Also near Meiringen is the other famous ravine, the Aareschlucht (The gorge of the River Aare)
