Saver Day Pass or other ticket for Glacier Express

Short summary – read this first

Joel is planning a trip from St. Moritz to Brig on the Glacier Express and then to Interlaken on the same day, September 22. He is confused about ticket options and prices, specifically regarding the Saver Day Pass and Swiss Half Fare Card. He's seeking clarity on how these passes work and what will save him money during his travels.

Key takeaways:
  • Saver Day Pass allows unlimited travel on the designated network for one day, covering the trips from St. Moritz to Brig and Brig to Interlaken without needing extra tickets.
  • Consider purchasing the Swiss Half Fare Card if you plan to use public transport frequently, as it can save you money over multiple trips.
  • For the Glacier Express, remember to reserve your seat separately as it is required.

    Hi

I am booking a trip and got a bit confused. Hope someone can help me understand.

I am was looking to book a 1st class Glacier Express (GE) trip from St. Mortiz to Brig for my wife and I on 22-9-2019. Then from Brig to Interlaken on the same day.

So, when I look at the ticket for GE from St. Mortiz to Brig for 22-9-2019 a few days ago, it shows that full-flex ticket was CHF 201, with saver day pass was CHF 88, and furthermore if I had a half-fare ticket it would be CHF 49.

However, when I looked at the same ticket today, it showed that full-flex ticket was CHF 201, no saver day pass ticket was available and half-fare ticket would be 100.5.

    My question is this:

    1. Does this mean that the ticket previously had a cheaper option which allowed for saver day pass, which is no longer available? will it become available again?

    2. Assuming option one comes back again (saver day pass ticket), do I need to buy both a saver day pass for that day, and a half-fare pass?

    3. If I do buy a saver day pass for that date. Do I need to look for a train from Brig to Interlaken which allows for saver day pass (in order to get cheaper tickets)?

    Any help is appreciated.

    Thank you.

    Joel

Hi Joel! Thank you for joining MySwissAlps.

The offer and availability of Saver Day Passes and prices vary. However, if do see them available for September 22 through the retailers listed at http://www.myswissalps.com/sa verdaypass/price, for example https://www.happyrail. com/en/pass/europe/swi tzerland/swiss-saver-day-pass. I’m not sure why the timetable first mentioned this option and then didn’t. You may have been looking at a slightly different connection, for example.

There are no particular trains “qualifying” or “allowing” for a Saver Day Pass. If such a pass is available, you can use it on any of the trains according to the validity area at http://www.myswissalps.com/sa verdaypass/validity. See http://www.myswissalps.com/sa verdaypass/howtouse as well. You may be confusing this with a Supersaver ticket, which indeed is bound to specific trains and departure times only: http://www.myswissalps.com/tr aintickets/switzerland.

Whether or not it’s wise to buy a Swiss Half Fare Card (http://www.myswissalps.com/sw isshalffarecard) too, depends on your other plans. If you’ll be using public transportation on more days and for more trips, it will very probably pay off. And I assume you’ll be planning some more train trips before and after the journey St. Moritz-Brig-Interlaken. You should look at your overall itinerary and then decide which pass suits your plans best. This could the combination of a Swiss Half Fare Card and an occasional Saver Day Pass, but you may also find that a Swiss Travel Pass (http://www.myswissalps.com/sw isstravelpass) is a better deal. Here’s how to compare your options: http://www.myswissalps.com/tr ain/ticketspasses/prac tical/chooserailpass.

    Hi Annika

Thank you for your response. I am however, still a little confused by the saver day pass.

St. Moritz to Brig: prices are: full = CHF 201, with HFC = CHF 100.50

Brig to Interlaken: prices are: full = CHF 81 with HFC = CHF 40.50 (but I saw a super saver ticket going for CHF 12.20)

    1. I deinitely want to buy a HFC, because it will work out cheaper for the rest of my trip in Switzerland.

    2. If I buy a Saver Day pass for CHF 49, does that mean I do not need to buy the ticket for St. Moritz to Brig and Brig to Interlaken (both taken on same date)?

Since my understanding is that a saver day pass allow me unlimited ride for that particular day, correct? So, my only cost for that day would be HFC = CHF 120 + Saver Day Pass = CHF 49, for a total of CHF 169. and I can take those two trains, is this correct?

    Kind regards

    Joel

    Hi Joel,

If you’ve done the maths and know for sure that the Swiss Half Fare Card is your best option then yes, your understandings are correct. The Saver Day Pass allows unlimited traveling on the network indicated at http://www.myswissalps.com/sa verdaypass/validity during an entire day, so that will cover the trip St. Moritz-Brig-Interlaken and you don’t need any additional tickets. Mind that you do need seat reservations for the Glacier Express. You can get your products through the links below:
