Scenic train ride from Geneva to Milan. Stay in Montreux?

Short summary – read this first

Nancy Payne is flying into Geneva and planning to head to Milan the next day. She's looking for the best scenic train options and is open to an overnight stay, possibly in Montreux, during her trip in November, which she knows is a low season.

Key takeaways:
  • Consider staying overnight in Montreux for easy access to the scenic GoldenPass train ride, which operates year-round.
  • The Lötschberger Mountain Railway route from Interlaken to Brig offers stunning views and also runs all year.
  • If time permits, the full GoldenPass route to Lucerne is worth considering before heading to Milan, but be aware that the Gotthard Panorama Express may not be operating in late October.

Flying into Geneva and heading to Milan the next day. Interested in the best scenic train option and if it’s worth it open to a longer trip/detour etc. Also open to a night stay other than Geneva i.e. Montreaux?  We have been to Switzerland a few times (summer, fall) but this time it will be low season in November if that makes a difference?

    Thank you.

    Hi Nancy,

If you are flying into Geneva, yes, you could consider making your way to Montreux and staying overnight.  All about Montreux with some accommodation options here:  https://www.myswissalps.com/town/montreux/

From Montreux, there is the GoldenPass scenic train ride, which runs all year.  More information in the below link:

Alighting at Interlaken, you could take the scenic Lötschberger Mountain Railway route down to Brig (also runs all year).  Details below:

    Thereafter, continue on to Milan.

Or if time allows, take the full GoldenPass route to Lucerne.  In Lucerne, the Gotthard Panorama Express starts here, ending in Lugano, after you can take a train to Milan.  The Gotthard Panorama Express does stop operating towards the end of October but the route is still serviced by the regular trains.  More information on this route here, scroll to “Other train options to travel on the same route”.

I hope this gives you a few ideas.  Do plan your journey times using the Swiss timetable:  https://www.myswissalps.com/travel/public-transport/timetable/

    Kind regards,

    Yolanda
