Hike from Schynige Platte to First in March

Short summary – read this first

A traveler named Sinja is planning a trip to Switzerland for the first week of March and wants to know if hiking trails will be accessible. Given the high-altitude winter conditions, Sinja will likely find limited hiking options, as many trails do not open until late spring.

Key takeaways:
  • Check if the winter hiking trail from First to the Faulhorn is open, as it offers a prepared route despite snow conditions.
  • Contact the local tourist office or your hotel for current trail conditions, as accessibility can vary due to weather.
  • Consider that March is still winter at high altitudes, and many trails may not be maintained until later in the spring.

    Hi Sinja,

I’m afraid that it won’t be accessible. The train is not operating and will not re-open until May 26, 1018.

    Hi Sinja,

There is a prepared winter hiking trail from First to the Faulhorn (and back), which is the first part of the route you had in mind. The rest of the route will be inaccessible. July to September is the best season. First to Bort is another winter route. From Bort there’s a bus back down to Grindelwald. Check with the tourist office whether these trails are actually open when you’re there, as it’s all weather dependent. The staff of your hotel may know this also.

    Hi Arno

do you know when they stop maintaining winter hiking trails. I would expect it is sometime in late spring. This past year in early September both First to Faulhorn and First to Waldspitz sections were impassable for couple of days due to snow

I would think the trail from Lauderbrunnen to Stechelberg might be open but March would likely be a problem for about all trails not maintained by locals. Mark

    Hi Sinja –

You probably have figured it out from the comments in this thread, but March is still Winter at high altitudes…lots of snow. In addition to blocking trails….except for the ones that are groomed for winter hiking as noted by Arno….there is significant potential for snow slides.

Even at lower altitudes in non-Alpine Switzerland, Spring has not really begun.

That may not mean snow on the ground, but the trails may not be cleaned up by the responsible local government until April or May…or June.
