PeakPass or separate tickets for Matterhorn Glacier/Gornergrat/Rothorn

Short summary – read this first

A traveler is planning a trip to Zermatt from March 20 to 24 and is comparing ticket options for the Matterhorn Glacier Paradise, Gornergrat, and Rothorn/Sunnegga. They are trying to figure out whether it's cheaper to buy tickets separately with their Swiss Travel Pass or to get a Peak Pass.

Key takeaways:
  • If you have a Swiss Travel Pass, purchasing individual tickets for the mountains may be cheaper than the Peak Pass even with a 25% discount.
  • You can apply for the Swiss Family Card, allowing children under 16 to travel for free when with an adult holding a valid ticket.
  • It’s recommended to purchase the Peak Pass closer to your travel date based on the weather forecast.

Traveling to Zermatt from March 20 to 24. I computed buying tickets given that I have the Swiss travel pass for the Matterhorn Glacier Paradise, Gornergrat and Rothorn/ Sunnegga and it seems like it’s cheaper to buy the tickets separately for each of the 3 mountains vs getting a Peak Pass. Can anyone recommend what’s best? Thanks!

    Hi DTC,

If you have the Swiss Travel Pass, I am not sure if you are aware, you receive a 25% discount when you purchase the Peak Pass.

More on this in our Zermatt travel guide, scroll to “All about the Peak Pass”:

That said, as you have discovered, you’ll already receive discounted ticket prices for the mountain excursions with the Swiss Travel Pass so the Peak Pass may not be that beneficial unless you were planning to visit the mountains more than once during your stay.

In case you needed some Swiss Travel Pass purchase options, you can find some in the attached link:

    Kind regards,

    Yolanda

Hi DTC! I happened to carry out calculations for a day trip to Zermatt including these 3 mountains a few days ago, and found that separate tickets with Swiss Travel Pass discounts are slightly cheaper than a 1-day Peak Pass with Swiss Travel Pass discount. So yes, I can confirm your assumption :-).

    Remarks:

    • My calculations are based on a 1-day visit including all 3 peaks.
    • For the visit to Gornergrat (https://www.myswissalps.com/activity/gornergrat/) and Matterhorn Glacier Paradise (https://www.myswissalps.com/activity/matterhorn/), I based my calculations on the Peak2Peak ticket that’s meant for a specific route, using the Riffelberg Express gondolas that connect both mountain routes. A Peak2Peak ticket is cheaper than regular return tickets Zermatt-Gornergrat and Zermatt-Matterhorn Glacier Express. The Riffelberg Express operates during your visit in late March, so the Peak2Peak ticket will be available to you.

Details can be found in the Zermatt travel guide Yolanda referred to.

    Hi Yolanda,

Thanks for your help. We plan to visit the 3 mountains separately. If I compute individual tickets to each mountain, it’s still cheaper than getting the Peak Pass with Swiss travel pass 25% discount. Am I right on this one?

    Thanks!

    Hello,

I will be traveling with my 2 boys – 11 and 13 years old. Do they require tickets for the trains for each mountain? If so, I think the Peak Pass comes out cheaper. For 3 days, I checked the website, here’s the computation-

3 days Children 9 to 11 years old is at 109 CHF

    3 days Adulst reduced 2 x 163 CHF = 326 CHF

This is given that we have a Swiss Travel Pass. Total is 435 CHF. Is this correct?

For individual tickets with Swiss Travel Pass –

    Gornergrat CHF 46 for adults

    Sunnegga CHF 14.5

    Mattterhorn Glacier Paradise CHF 47.5

    Blauherd CHF 29

    Rothorn CHF 40.5

That’s CHF 177.5 x 2 adults, total of CHF 355 without the tickets of the 2 kids. So I guess it’s cheaper to get the Peak Pass for 3 days (for 2 adults, 2 kids -11 and 13 years old). Am I correct on this?

    Thanks!

    Hi DTC,

As you have been considering the Swiss Travel Pass (https://www.myswissalps.com/travel-ticket/swiss-travel-pass/)  then you are entitled to apply for the complimentary Swiss Family Card for your two boys.  They can thereon, travel for free whilst with you.  No tickets necessary, even for mountain transport, as long as you have a valid discounted ticket.

All details on the Swiss Family Card in the below link, scroll to “Swiss Family Card”:

So based on your Swiss Travel Pass calculations for the one day, a 3 day PeakPass would be more economical.  I wouldn’t purchase the PeakPass till nearer the time.  You’ll be fine to do this a day before, once you know the weather forecast will be fine.

    Kind regards,

    Yolanda
