Should we spend a full day in Interlaken or Geneva

Short summary – read this first

John Ung is planning to spend a full day in Zurich in mid-June before heading home and wants to know if he should visit Interlaken or Geneva. He also has questions about purchasing a Super Saver ticket for his journey. The trip is focused on experiencing the beautiful landscapes of Switzerland.

Key takeaways:
  • Consider visiting the Jungfrau Region from Interlaken for scenic hikes and stunning views, which can fill your day.
  • If you have the Swiss Travel Pass, many attractions in the Jungfrau Region are free or discounted.
  • For tickets, Super Saver tickets can usually be purchased a few months in advance, and they will be emailed to you after purchase.

After our third trip to Switzerland in Jue 2020, we would have covered most of the tourists destinations except to Interlaken and Geneva.

We have one full day free in Zurich in mid June and a day validity on STP before departure for home the next day. Should we spend a full day in Interlaken or Geneva? Any other suggestions will be most appreciated.

How early can we purchase a Super Saver ticket for a particular journey on a day? Will the ticket be emailed to us?

Thanks in advance for any assistance

If you mean by Interlaken, the Jungfrau Region, then I would go there if you haven’t already been. If you mean spend a full day in Interlaken then I think you might be hard pressed filling in a day there.

Have you been to the Jungfrau Region? Go from Interlaken to Lauterbrunnen. From Lauterbrunnen a very nice circuit to do is to Grütschalp (cable car), Mürren(train), Gimmelwald (cable car), Stechelberg (cable car), Lauterbrunnen (bus). From Mürren you can easily visit Schilthorn(don’t miss The Thrill Walk at Birg) and even Allmendhubel if you have time. In between Stechelberg and Lauterbrunnen the bus stops at the Trummelbach Falls. Well worth a look. The entire circuit and side trips are free with the Swiss Travel Pass in 2019 apart from the Allmendhubel Funicular (50% discount) and the Falls (modest entry fee). In 2020 Mürren to Schilthorn will be 50% discount.

Another option you might look at if you haven’t been is St Gallen and the Appenzell Region. Perhaps not a “tourist hotspot” but lovely just the same.

Geneva is a pretty long day trip.

    Hi John Ung,

I definitely agree with Rockoyster. Just to see Interlaken (http://www.myswissalps.com/in terlaken), a few hours is more than enough. But if you are speaking about the whole Jungfrau region (http://www.myswissalps.com/ju ngfrauregion/activitie s), you could spend easily a few days there.

Geneva (http://www.myswissalps.com/ge neva) is nice too if you like big cities, but you should consider the traveling time to get there, although the train route along Lake Geneva (http://www.myswissalps.com/la kegeneva) is very beautiful.

So it depends on you, what do you prefer, cities or nature?

Thanks for your suggestions and providing all the useful information and links

The suggested trip to Jungfrau Region sounds interesting for a sunny day as we do like to do walking
