Sightseeing options for short trip in Lucerne

Short summary – read this first

A family of 3 is planning a trip to Zurich, Luzern, and Interlaken in late June. They've decided to arrive in Luzern at 10 AM, explore the city, take a Lake Lucerne boat, and then continue to Lungern. They want advice on the feasibility of their plan and whether they would miss anything by taking the boat instead of the Luzern-Interlaken express train.

Key takeaways:
  • You can store your luggage at the Luzern train station while you explore the city and take the boat cruise.
  • Taking the roundtrip boat cruise is more convenient if you have heavy luggage, as you can pick it up when you return to Luzern.
  • The longer summer days mean you'll have time for both city exploration and a short excursion to a nearby mountain.

    Hi,

We are a family of 3 adults and planning to visit Zurich-Luzern-Interlaken in late June.

The initial plan was to arrive in Luzern at about 10AM and stay in the city for the night. The plan would be to just walk around old town and also take the lake luzern boat if possible. (To my knowledge, any excursion to the popular mountains surrounding Luzern would be kind of a stretch in such single day schedule, especially starting in late morning) Then we plan to take the Luzern-Interlaken express on the next morning.

Nevertheless I just learned that my parents had already visited Luzern and Mt.Titlis previously, though really rushed(on one of those City-hopping tours, 5 countries in 8d etc). Given that they are less interested in cities and more into nature, and also given that it’s quite difficult to find a reasonably priced accommodation for 3 adults in Luzern this late, I came across the idea with staying outside of Luzern instead.

I had able to make reservation of a B&B at Lungern, thus my tentative plan would be as following: Arrive in Lucern in 10AM(from Zurich), store our luggage at the station, walk around the old town. Then in the afternoon, we would take the boat from Luzern Bahnhofquai -Alpnachstad(16:38 – 17:35) , then go on to take the train to Lungern(-18:50).

My question would be: a) would this plan be doable, or is it reasonable to do so?

b)would we be missing anything on the “Luzern-Interlaken express” for taking the boat or for the timing (late evening)?

    Thanks!

    Hi jphtwn,

This plan is feasible. In my opinion, arriving at 10am in Lucerne still gives you enough time to explore the city and include one local mountain excursion or a roundtrip cruise on Lake Lucerne. The days are longer in summer, the sun doesn’t set until past 8pm. If you have time, I suggest a quick visit to Pilatus via the cable car from Kriens or take the 1-hour roundtrip on the lake (Lucerne-Burgenstock- Lucerne).

You can store your luggage at the station so you won’t have to take them along during your excursions. You can pick up your luggage in the evening or late afternoon and continue your journey to Lungern on the Lucerne-Interlaken Express. You would still enjoy great views even if you take the 6 or 7 pm train.

Here are some useful links to help you plan your sightseeing trip.

    Hope this helps.

    Regards,

    Anna

    Thank you for your reply!

Would you recommend taking the 1-hour roundtrip Lucerne-Burgenstock- Lucerne then take train from Lucern-Lungern or single trip from Lucerne – Alpnachstad then continue on to Lungern? Thanks

    Hi jphtown,

If you take the roundtrip boat cruise, you can store your luggage at the train station and pick them up when your return to Lucerne. The train journey from Lucerne to Lungern is direct and partly follows the scenic Lucerne-Interlaken Express route.

If you take the single boat trip to Alpnachstad, you will have to take your luggage with you. The train journey from Alpnachstad to Lungern includes a train change in Sarnen.

Both options are doable but the first option might be more convenient if you have heavy luggage with you.

    Regards,

    Anna

    Hi Anna,

Thank you! We are traveling with quite heavy luggage so I would definitely consider it!

    Sincerely,

    JPH
