Ski trip Jungfrau area March 17-22: Wengen or Grindelwald as a base?

Short summary – read this first

A traveler is planning a ski trip to Zermatt and Lucerne from March 6th to March 17th with their husband and ski club. They are considering extending their trip to ski in the Jungfrau region but are unsure about the snow conditions in March and where to base themselves for skiing. They loved Wengen in the summer and are considering Grindelwald for skiing instead.

Key takeaways:
  • January and February are typically the best months for skiing in the Jungfrau region due to better snow conditions.
  • Check the snow situation for the Jungfrau ski area as it can vary year to year.
  • Both Wengen and Grindelwald are good bases for skiing, but Wengen is quieter and may suit your preference better.
  • Review a ski map of the Jungfrau region to see all available runs and make an informed choice on where to stay.

I have been to Switzerland the last 2 summers. This upcoming Winter my husband and I will be traveling with our ski club To Zermatt and Lucerne from March 6th to March 17th. We are considering staying longer and skiing the Jungfraujoch area. Going on the front end is not an option.  I know snow is unpredictable. Would you consider a ski trip to that area at that time of year and if so where would you base at? We were in Wengen this past summer and loved it and we would definintley consider staying there again. However, for skiing I was thinking Grindelwald as a base may be better? I don’t want to stay in Interlaken.

If you don’t think we should extend and we go there a different year, what time of year would you consider?

    Hi Bless10s,

Generally speaking January and February are considered  the better months for skiing in the Jungfrau region.  Of course, as you say, this depends entirely on the snow situation itself.  It can vary season to season / year to year.  This year parts of the Jungfrau ski area were still open till the end of April so, this does not necessarily mean that all runs and chair lifts are in operation.  You are best to check again, when the season opens this winter for approximate dates and runs that will remain open till the end.

Personally, I have always stayed in Wengen (https://www.myswissalps.com/town/wengen/), when skiing in the Jungfrau region.  For me I find it suits what I require. It’s also a little quieter than Grindelwald (https://www.myswissalps.com/town/grindelwald/).   I have only skied in the area during February.

Perhaps take a look at a ski map of the entire Jungfrau region.  You’ll be able to see all the different runs available.  Perhaps that would help you decide whether to stay in Grindelwald or Wengen.  I don’t think you can go wrong with either.

    Kind regards,
    Yolanda
