Do I need more tickets with a Zermatt ski pass?

Short summary – read this first

A traveler named Apfels is planning a week of skiing in Zermatt at the end of March with their son. They want to know if the 6-day ski passes cover the train ride to Gornergrat and other ski areas like Sunnegga, Klein Matterhorn, and Schwarzsee. It turns out the ski passes include all necessary transportation to reach the slopes.

Key takeaways:
  • The ski pass includes transportation to all ski areas, so no additional train tickets are needed to reach Gornergrat or others.
  • It's recommended to take the Gornergrat railway for a gradual acclimatization to the altitude before skiing.
  • You can purchase ski passes in Zermatt upon arrival, or buy them online in advance for convenience.
  • Make sure to check the FAQ page for additional information on pickup locations for ski passes.

My son and I are arriving in Zermatt late March for a week of skiing. If I purchase 6 day ski passes, will I also need to purchase a train ticket(s) to ski Gornergrat to reach the pistes or does the ski pass cover the cost of the train (cog rail) from Zermatt to Gornergrat? The same question applies to the other three ski areas within Zermatt (Sunnegga, Klein Matterhorn and Schwarzsee).

    Hi Apfels,

A ski pass includes all the transportation to reach the slopes, you don’t need further tickets. More details can be found here: https://www.matterhorn paradise.ch/en/Book/On line-tickets?category[]=520186.

The cable cars and rack railways are all part of the ski lift system.

One tip I have as regards personal wellbeing is that the Gornergrat railway is a very good way to start the day’s skiing as it takes you up the mountain at a slower pace than the other ways up so your body gets used to the altitude more gradually

I’m glad you are interested in my tip. I have in the past gone up the alternative way to the top of Klein Matterhorn and felt distinctly dizzy at the very top – not good if you are about to launch yourself downhill at speed on skis!

For fun – here’s a few of my Gornergrat pictures

As a follow-up, there are a couple of different websites to by ski passes. For http://www.matterhornparadise .ch/en/Book/Online-tickets, there is the option of linking your ski pass to either a ski card or a Zermatt Card. Another option is to pick up the pass/card in Zermatt upon arrival.

My question is, what are the locations for pick up in Zermatt? Is it suggested to purchase far in advance or to buy on arrival? We’ll arrive on Sunday afternoon and ski for the first day on Monday.

As always, I appreciate peoples’ advice and insight.

    Hi Apfels,

Their FAQ page should answer those questions: http://www.matterhornparadise .ch/en/Company/FAQ
