Budget accommodation near St. Moritz for the Glacier Express

Short summary – read this first

Arin is planning a trip to Switzerland in early October, landing in Zurich and traveling through Lucerne, Lugano, St. Moritz/Chur, and Interlaken. He is looking for budget-friendly accommodation options for his overnight stay before taking the Glacier Express.

Key takeaways:
  • Consider using regular train services instead of the expensive panoramic trains to save money while enjoying the same beautiful scenery.
  • Purchase the compulsory seat reservations for scenic trains as soon as your travel dates are confirmed since they sell out quickly.
  • Check for accommodation options in St. Moritz and other destinations via provided links for a range of budgets.

    Hi,

I am currently planning for a tour of switzerland next year in early October.
My rough itinerary is to land in zurich, stay overnight in lucerne, catch the gotthard panaromic express to lugano, stay in lugano for two nights, take the bernina express to st moritz/chur, stay overnight somewhere in st moritz/chur, take the glacier express upto brig and then take a train to interlaken.
i am looking for suggestions where it is budget friendly for an overnight stay to take the glacier express for the next day.

    Thank you all in advance.

    Hello Arin

    Welcome to MySwissAlps

I cannot help with accommodation.  But as to travel, if you are ‘on a budget’, avoid (if you can) the expensive ‘panorama trains’ and travel the same lines using the ordinary train services which run every hour.  The scenery is the same….

In particular, read the ‘trip report’ posted by ‘Queenie’ on 4th October, entitled  ‘My review of Swiss panoramic trains…’  This report and the various replies, make very interesting reading.

(You will also need to carefully consider whether to get a Swiss Travel Pass (https://www.myswissalps.com/travel-ticket/swiss-travel-pass/))

    Best wishes

    Roger

    Hi arin,

For accommodation suggestions (with various budgets and alternative options) in St. Moritz, please take a look in the link below:

That’s lovely you are planning to take some of the scenic train rides when here.  More information on these rides can also be found in the links here.  Once your dates are confirmed, I recommend you purchase the compulsory seat reservations once they open up as they are popular and they can sell out.  (You can worry about the actual ticket or rail pass later).

In case you needed some Lucerne and Lugano accommodation suggestions too, do take a look in the attached links below:

    Kind regards,

    Yolanda
