Saver Day Pass/companion pass for Glacier Express

Short summary – read this first

A traveler is planning a trip from Zermatt to Como on April 16, trying to use the Saver Day Pass and Companion Ticket. They are looking for help on how to book tickets and whether they need reservations for certain trains.

Key takeaways:
  • You can reserve seats on the Glacier Express via their official website and select 'Own Ticket' when prompted to claim a discount.
  • For regular trains, just hop on as no reservations are required from Andermatt to Chiasso with your Saver Day Pass.
  • Ensure you select 'No Discount' when purchasing the Saver Day Pass online to avoid confusion with the half-fare card.

Can the supersaver and companion day passes be used on the Bernina Express? If so, can I use them on line to book a reservation? I am trying to travel on April 16 from Zermatt to Como and want to use the supersaver and companion for the Swiss portion of the trip, and I am having trouble figuring out how to do that. Is there an alternative to doing this on line? Thank you.

Hello pwspws and Welcome to MySwissAlps

First off the Bernina Express (http://www.myswissalps.com/be rninaexpress) is not exactly on the way between Zermatt and Como.

Do you mean a Saver Day Pass (http://www.myswissalps.com/sa verdaypass and bit.ly/2rkekat)? I’ve never heard of a supersaver pass.

If you have a Saver Day pass then your partner can travel with you just about anywhere using a Companion Ticket.

If you want to maximise use of your Swiss passes then you can go from Zermatt to Como via Domodossola, Locarno and Lugano. That takes you on the Centovali Express from Domodossola to Locarno. The SDP will get you to the border at Chiasso.

Or you can go Zermatt to Como via Andermatt, Göschenen and Chiasso. That takes you on the Glacier Express route to Andermatt and the Gotthard Panorama Express route Göschenen to Lugano.

Use the SBB Timetable (bit.ly/2HH1U7B) to plan your travel. If you are not familiar with using the timetable it will pay to first read the instructions on this page – http://www.myswissalps.com/ti metable.

Thank you for the prompt response. And yes, I meant the Glacier Express, not the Bernina. And yes, the Saver Day Pass is what I meant also. I have checked the timetable, and there are trains which work, either going on the Centovali Express thru Domodossola, or the Glacier Express to Andermatt as you say. BUT, I cannot seem to find the correct way to use/apply the saver day pass and the companion when I want to book whatever ticket I decide to purchase. There is no drop down menu for the Saver Day Pass or Companion. Suggestions? And do I then have to purchase the Italy portion of the ticket elsewhere? Thanks.

If you want to reserve seats on the Glacier Express then goto shop.glacierexpress.ch /gex_en/specials/daytr ips/glacier-express. Or you can just take regular trains and avoid the reservation charge and be more flexible in your timing.

If your reserve seats on the GEX, after you have selected your date of travel and seats the next screen shows you an option to claim a reduction. Just choose “Own Ticket” for both passengers. That should do the trick and you will only be charged for the seat reservations.

If you follow either of the routes I mentioned you will just need a ticket from Chiasso to Como. See http://www.myswissalps.com/tr aintickets/italy.

You won’t need tickets or reservations for the Swiss trains (apart from the GEX). The Centovalli from Domodossola to Locarno is treated as part of the Swiss network. Refer to SDP validity map at http://www.myswissalps.com/sa verdaypass/validity. Just hop on regular trains and go (and keep you fingers crossed you come across an inspector who is up to speed on this rare seasonal special deal 😉).

    Terrific.

    Thank you for the help.

We are looking forward to our stay in Switzerland.

    Have a good day.

But now, I cannot figure out how to purchase the “regular” Saver Day Pass – all that shows up when I search for April 16 is the half price card day pass for 1st class at CHF 82 yet it shows availability for the regular Saver Day Pass for CHF 88. Any suggestions? I click on the box/entry for the 88.00 first class pass, and every time the half price pass is the only one I can see. Thanks you

Okay, now I cannot figure out why I cannot purchase the Saver Day Pass for April 16 – when I try to do so on the correct page with the correct date, when I click on the “box” for that day, the only thing which comes up is the half fare card pricing (CHF82), and not the regular saver pass for CHF 88 for the first class pass. Any suggestions?

You need to put in your details then chose No Discount under Discount Cards. I’ve just done it and got CHF88 for 1st Class.

    See attached . . .

That worked! I have purchased my saver day pass and my wife’s companion pass (at only CHF 38) for April 16, and booked seats on the Glacier Express to Andermatt. From there, we would go to Göschenen and Chiasso. Do we need reservations for that extra routing? As I understand it, we need to go from Andermatt to Goschenen in order to change to Chiasso? And then we buy a separate ticket from Chiasso to Como, correct? That ticket we purchase in Chiasso?

Finally, I hope, it is my understanding that our saver day passes (which we already purchased and plan to use for our trip from Zurich to Zermatt on April 14) also will allow us to use the Gornergrat Bahn in Zermatt? Please confirm.

Thank you again for the assistance.

You have all the trip from Zermatt to Como correct.

But the Saver Day Pass does not offer any discount on the Gornergrat trip I’m afraid. If you read the fine print on the validity map I sent you it says Saver Day Pass without half-fare card pays full price on that dotted route. 😞

    Darn!

Please also confirm that I do not need to make any reservations of any kind for the remainder of the trip between Andermatt and Chiasso. Do we just get on the train from Andermatt to Goschenen and then from there to Chiasso, as long as we have those Saver Day Passes?

    Thank you.

Affirmative. No reservations required Andermatt to Chiasso. Just hop on and go armed with your Saver Day Pass and Companion Ticket.

On the day you use the Companion Ticket I would as a precaution print off the conditions of use from the SBB website and take it with you. Just in case you strike an inspector who is not familiar with this short term SBB deal. Better safe than sorry.
