Swiss Travel Pass worth it for short 2 day trip

Short summary – read this first

A traveler is planning a 2-day trip to Interlaken, Lauterbrunnen, and Murren for two adults, with their hotel located in Interlaken. They are seeking advice on whether to purchase the Swiss Travel Pass for their itinerary, which includes visits to Trummelbach Falls, Staubbach Falls, Lake Thun, Gimmelwald, Murren, and Schilthorn. Tips and cost comparisons for travel options are needed.

Key takeaways:
  • For just two days, the Swiss Travel Pass may not be worth it, but it covers the Schilthorn completely.
  • If you buy the Swiss Travel Pass, you can start using it as soon as you cross into Switzerland from Germany.
  • The Swiss Half Fare Card gives 50% off trips like Jungfraujoch for the entire journey, while the Swiss Travel Pass gives only 25% off the return trip.

Hello! I have the following itinerary planned for 2 days within Interlaken/Lauterbrunnen/Murren for 2 adults with our hotel being in Interlaken. Would it be worth it for us to get the Swiss Pass?

Day 1: Trummelbach Falls, Staubbach Falls, Lake Thun

    Day 2: Gimmelwald, Murren, Schilthorn

Travel each day would be starting and ending in Interlaken.

    Thank you!

Hi LindsayMVK and welcome to MySwissAlps!

Are those your only trips in Switzerland? How are you getting in and out of the country?

For just those 2 days I don’t think a Swiss Travel Pass (not a Swiss Pass, that is a different product) isn’t worth it. But it is probably pretty close as Schilthorn is fully covered.

We are arriving and departing Switzerland by train. We’re coming from Germany. As of now, yes that’s all we have planned. I don’t want to put in too much – I like to leave time in the day for any wandering 🙂

thank you! I will be sure to use that link

Yes, the spreadsheet will give you the definite answer.

If you do buy the Swiss Travel Pass (http://www.myswissalps.com/sw isstravelpass/price) you can start using it as soon as you cross the German-Swiss border. Often that might be crossing at Basel but it depends on where in Germany you are coming from and what train you take.

So you need a ticket from “German town” to “Swiss border town” and that ticket you can buy here: http://www.myswissalps.com/tr aintickets/germany and then you can use your Swiss Travel Pass to cover the rest of your trip.

You can use the Swiss railways timetable to plan the trips: http://www.myswissalps.com/ti metable

Thank you for your help, Lucas. I am playing around with the excel spreadsheet as I plan our trip. I’ve added Jungfraujoch. I’m a bit confused when comparing prices for Jungfraujoch between the Swiss Travel Pass and the Swiss Half Fare Card. The travel pass gives 25% off the return only, but the half fare card is 50% off the entire trip – is that true?

    Hi Lindsay,

You can find the discounts on http://www.myswissalps.com/ju ngfraujoch/tickets. The Swiss Travel Pass gives you free traveling until Wengen/Grindelwald, and 25% off the rest. The Swiss Half Fare Card gives 50% off the entire trip from Interlaken. All discounts and free traveling apply to routes. Single or return does not matter.

One thing to consider is that you have to buy tickets for each trip with the half fare card. With the Swiss travel pass you do not have to buy tickets as you have the pass.

You can also buy many tickets online with the discounted price here: http://www.myswissalps.com/tr aintickets/switzerland halffare
