15-day Swiss Travel Pass or 8 days + Swiss Half Fare Card?

Short summary – read this first

A traveler is planning an 11-day trip starting from Zurich and visiting Lauterbrunnen, Zermatt, and Interlaken, among other places. They are trying to decide between buying a 15-day Swiss Travel Pass or an 8-day pass combined with a half fare card, seeking advice on which option is more cost-effective.

Key takeaways:
  • Invest in the 15-day Swiss Travel Pass for CHF 459, as it offers greater flexibility and savings compared to the 8-day pass and half fare card.
  • Consider that major trips between cities, like Interlaken to Zurich, can cost more than CHF 40 without a rail pass, making the 15-day pass a better option.
  • The Swiss Travel Pass allows unlimited travel on public transport without needing to purchase individual tickets, adding convenience to your travels.

Hi, i am planning for 11 days trips from Zurich -> Lauterbrunnen -> Zermatt -> Interlaken -> Zurich. Main places to visit are Lauterbrunnen, Grinderwald First, Jungfraujoch, Lake Brienz, Lake Thun, Zermatt, Harder Kulm, Zurich.

Places like First (with adventure package -2 games costs CHF 101), Jungfraujoch (CHF 219 1st class), Gornergrat Train (Zermatt to Rottenboden CHF 114), are not 100% covered by Swiss Travel pass and I still need to pay about 50-75% of the ticket fare, where I think half fare card does not help much here, because i need to spend CHF 120 to buy half fare card and that 50% is more or less same like what Swiss travel pass can cover.

I plan to buy a 15 days Swiss Travel Pass instead of (8 days+ Half Fare Card). 15 days cost CHF 459 and 8 days cost 439 for 2nd class.

Is 15 days pass more money saving than 8 days+half fare in my scenario? Appreciate if someone could advise on this. Thank you very much

    Hello sansanche

    Welcome to MySwissAlps

First, a clarification.  The cost of a second class continuous eight days Swiss Travel Pass is 419 CHF.    The cost of a second class continuous fifteen days Swiss Travel Pass is 459 CHF.   The difference is therefore forty CHF.

But I would still recommend that you invest in a 15-day continuous pass.

In recent years my Swiss holidays/vacations have been always 10-12 days long.  I always, without any hesitation, invest in a 15 day continuous STP.   And remember that one of the great merits of this investment is that, except when going up high mountains, you can hop on any form of public transport without having to pause to buy a ticket.   You already have your ticket….

Best wishes for your detailed planning

    Hi sansancheng,

I agree with Roger to get the 15-day Swiss Travel Pass (CHF459 2nd class). An 8-day Swiss Travel Pass costs CHF419, a difference of CHF40. A single journey from Interlaken to Zurich will cost you you more than CHF40 without any railpass.

If you plan on getting the Swiss Half Fare Card (https://www.myswissalps.com/travel-ticket/swiss-half-fare-card/) on top, that’s an additional CHF120.

You can find tips on how to choose the best rail pass here: https://www.myswissalps.com/travel/tickets/compare/

    Hope this helps.
    Regards,
    Anna
