2 days Lucerne & 5 days Grindelwald itinerary

Short summary – read this first

A couple is visiting Switzerland for 7 nights, spending 2 nights in Luzern and 5 in Grindelwald. They want to know if they have enough time to visit both Mount Pilatus and Mount Titlis, along with other activities in Luzern and around Grindelwald, while using their 8-day Swiss Travel Pass.

Key takeaways:
  • You can see Trummelbach Falls and catch a bus to continue your journey later.
  • The Swiss Travel Pass starts its validity on the nominated date, lasting for 8 full days regardless of the exact activation time.
  • Mount Pilatus is highly recommended, but if you wish to visit both Pilatus and Titlis in one day, check travel times beforehand.
  • Stopping in Mürren for lunch is a good idea, and you will pass by both ways.

Hey. Will be in Switzerland for 7 nights. 2 nights in Luzern and 5 in Grindlewald.

29th July land in Zurich 10.30am. head straight to Luzern where we will be based for 2 nights. Planning on combining the boat with the trip to Mount Pilatus. Would we enough time to do both Pilatus and Titilus with the time we have there? Any other things to do around the town of Luzern?

31st of July. We will be taking the train to Grindlewald arriving about mid day. We be here until the 05th of August and our flight back to Dublin is at 21.45 so we will have a good bit of that day too. We have definite things we want to do.

1: First cliff walk and also one of the ziplines. maybe a gentle hike around the area. We will probably combine this with the glacier canyon.

2: Jungfraujoch. We will have an 8day Swiss Travel Pass but would it be cheaper to go for the Good Morning Ticket?

3: Schilthorn. We are planning on going up from Grutschalp and the to Stechelberg it looks quite scary but amazing. We are planning to see the Trummelbach Falls, is it possible to get of the bus here then get back on on another on once we have seen the falls? Also would it be a good idea to stop in Murren on the way up for some lunch? Do you pass Murren both ways?

4: Also we are planning on going to Interlaken Ost and do a boat cruise on Lake Brienz.

5: We were also thinking of trying to ft in the Gelmer Funicular. Would this be too much to fit in? It looks incredible though!! If we do this we will probably combine it with our trip to Interlaken as we would have to pass here anyway.

As i mentioned before we are opting for the Swiss Travel Pass. Is it going to be valid for our journey back to the airport, as in if its activated at say 11.00am on the 29th will it still be valid on the 05th at say 19.00? From the hours I spent calculating our journeys the 8 day pass seems to be the best. Would I be correct in saying this? So it this doable in our time frame?? Any other tips or suggestions would be greatly appreciated! Thanks 🙂

    Sure

You can, or have lunch up top.

Do you pass Murren both ways?

    Yes

We were also thinking of trying to fit in the Gelmer Funicular. Would this be too much to fit in?

The trip to the Gelmer “Funicular” is about 2 hours each way from Grindelwald.

. . . we are opting for the Swiss Travel Pass. Is it going to be valid for our journey back to the airport, as in if its activated at say 11.00am on the 29th will it still be valid on the 05th at say 19.00?

You don’t activate and STP at a particular time. You nominate a start date and it is valid for 8 full days commencing on that date.

From the hours I spent calculating our journeys the 8 day pass seems to be the best. Would I be correct in saying this?

Probably, if that’s the answer you got after doing the math. You did use the spreadsheet at http://www.myswissalps.com/tr ain/ticketspasses/prac tical/chooserailpass right?

    Hi Lili34,

I would definitely go for Mount Pilatus and the Golden Roundtrip would I have to choose one of both.

If both are do-able in one day depends on how much traveling you want to do, use the timetable to find out.

Hi Steph. Ya we are hoping to fit the boat in with the trip to Pilatus on our first afternoon. And do Titlus the following morning. Thanks Steph. 🙂
