Switzerland weather in September, clothing choice

Short summary – read this first

A traveler named blondee is planning a 3-day trip to Zermatt in early September, followed by a ride on the Glacier Express to St. Moritz. They are asking for advice on the expected weather and clothing to pack for their visit, especially for the Gornergrat Railway.

Key takeaways:
  • Dress in layers for fluctuating temperatures at high altitudes, as it can be much colder than in the valley.
  • Bring a mix of clothing, including shorts and long pants, to adapt to different weather conditions.
  • The Gornergrat offers beautiful views, and taking the time to enjoy the sunset there is highly recommended.
  • Be aware that St. Moritz may be less crowded after the busy season ends, which can be a plus for exploration.

Early September 2019 we’ll be spending 3 days in Zermatt before taking the Glacier Express to St. Moritz. My question is what will the weather be like that time of year? One of the things we plan to do is take the Gornergrat Railway and the type of clothing needed at that time of year and trying NOT to overpack.

    Thanks,

    Hi blondee,

Be sure to do a quick search on our forums using the search bar. You’ll find other threads on the same topic, like this one: http://www.myswissalps.com/fo rum/topic/switzerland-weather-at-the-end-of-september

Best to pack, dress in layers, as when you are on a mountain top at 2500 or 3000 meters be prepared for colder weather. Perhaps 10/15 degrees or perhaps -5.

    Hi Blondee,

I just spent 2 weeks in Switzerland this past September (6th – 20th) and the weather was fantastic. I wore shorts the whole trip and the only time I wore long pants was on Mt. Titlis for the glacier and really didn’t need them. I traveled with a backpack the whole time that contained a pair of sweat pants, light rain jacket gloves and such (as well as my big bag of luggage). Bring a pair of long pants, or sweatpants just in cast you do need them.

I went to the Gornergrat as well. I spent the later part of the day ( 2 – plus hours) up on the Gornergrat watching the sun go down. I had on a sweatshirt and shorts and was perfectly comfortable. I also rode the Glacier Express from St. Moritz ( actually from Chur) to Zermatt. Beautiful ride. Long, but beautiful. The weather in St. Moritz was a bit cooler than in Zermatt. I enjoy the cool weather so I was fine, but I can see some wanting long pants. Be aware that St. Moritz was a ghost town when I was there (Sept 9th), as I just missed the busy season and it was a Sunday. Beautiful town, but I had it all to myself. Hope you have a great trip.
