Tell-Pass or Swiss Travel Pass: 3 days Lucerne Dec

Short summary – read this first

Felipe is planning a 3-day trip to Lucerne this December and wants to know if it's better to visit Mt. Titlis on a Sunday or during the week. He's also unsure whether to buy the Tell Pass or the Swiss Travel Pass for his planned activities, including a cruise on Lake Lucerne and trips to both mountains.

Key takeaways:
  • Get the Tell Pass Winter for your activities; it covers boat trips and both mountains entirely.
  • No need to book tickets in advance; just show your Tell Pass at the counter for any necessary free tickets.
  • Buying the Tell Pass online is better; you can have a PDF version on your phone as a backup.
  • Both Mt. Titlis and Mt. Pilatus are worth visiting, as they offer unique experiences.
  • Check out the Christmas market and Lilu Light Festival for evening activities in Lucerne.

    Hello everyone!

I’m travelling this december for 3 days to Lucerne and was thinking on having the following schedule:

    • First day (saturday): A boat / cruise in Lake Lucerne
    • Second day (sunday): Trip to Mt. Titlis
    • Third day (monday): Trip to Mt. Pilatus

    I have the following concerns:

    1. Is it okey to do Titlis on a sunday or should I do the mountains on weekdays?
    2. Is the “Tell Pass” better for this activities than the “Swiss Travel Pass”?
    3. I was planning on buying a “Tell Pass” considering the activities that I have in mind. I have been reading its website but don´t fully understand what is included and what isn´t. So I don´t know: (a) if both mountains and lake boats are 100% covered with this pass. Also, (b) if even though I buy the pass I also need to book tickets in advance (for trains, boats, cable cars, etc.) or just jump into one.
    4. Should I buy the Tell Pass (or Swiss Travel Pass) in advance or can I buy them once I arrive?

I would very much appreciate any help and clarity you can give me.

    Thanks in advance!

    Kind regards,

    Felipe

    Hi Felipe, welcome to MySwissAlps!

    1. No problem. I don’t know when in December you’ll be traveling, but early and mid-December are still pretty much low season. Traveling right before Christmas will make such attractions busier, but you should still be fine.
    2. Yes, a Tell-Pass Winter makes sense in your case. You’ll find all details at https://www.myswissalps.com/tellpasswinter
    3. Yes, boat trips on the lake and both Titlis and Pilatus are fully included. You can download a validity map from https://www.myswissalps.com/tellpasswinter/validity. If you browse further down on that page, you’ll also find a list of activities with the discount percentage offered by the Tell-Pass. No need to book anything in advance. You may still need to get a (free) ticket to pass electronic gates e.g. at the valley station of Titlis in Engelberg, but you’ll only have to show your pass at the counter to receive such a ticket. This info may help: http://www.myswissalps.com/tellpasswinter/howtouse.
    4. Both are an option. I prefer buying online in advance, especially if this gets me an electronic / print-at-home ticket. This way I have a pdf version stored on my phone and I can print as many back-up copies as I like. This isn’t the case with the 1 paper pass you’ll get when buying at a Swiss rail station. Please refer to https://www.myswissalps.com/tellpasswinter/price for trusted purchase options.

Thanks! This helps a lot! I will buy the Tell Pass in advance then, as you said, is more convenient to have a PDF version. I would only have a couple more questions:

    1. If I purchase the Tell Pass online, do I need to carry with me a printed version, or can I just relay on the PDF version on my phone when asked by train controllers?
    2. An unrelated question, about my itenerary, do you see it a good option? Are both mountains worth it or should I just so one mountain and do something different the other spare day? If that´s the case, do you have any suggestions?
    3. Do you have any suggestion on what to do in Lucerne during the night-time?

Thanks again for the kind help!

Yes it’s worth doing both Titlis and Pilatus. They are different types of mountain geographically.

Ther might not be too much to do in Luzern in the evening. Most Swiss cities and towns are geographically small, and can be quite quiet at night especially in winter.

    Hi Felipe,

It’s probably best to have a printed version and the >PDF as a back-up when you are travelling. You can find more details on how to use the Tell Pass here: http://www.myswissalps.com/tellpasswinter/howtouse

If you’re visiting in December, you should definitely check out the Christmas market at night. Also, you can check out the Lilu Light Festival Lucerne which is held every winter: http://www.lichtfestivalluzern.ch/en/

    Regards,

    Anna
