Glacier Express day trip information

Short summary – read this first

Herby is planning to purchase rail tickets for the Glacier Express tour, which takes about 8 to 9 hours one way. They're unsure if the $475 ticket is for a one-way trip or includes a return, and whether the train stays overnight at the station, requiring a hotel stay for the return journey.

Key takeaways:
  • The Glacier Express journey usually requires an overnight stay in both St. Moritz and Zermatt, so plan for accommodations.
  • If your ticket seems expensive, consider getting a Swiss Travel Pass, as it can save you money on long train trips.
  • Look up train schedules on the official timetable to find the best departure times for your journey.

I’m think about purchasing the rail tickets for the Glaser Express tour (Day trip).

All the info that I have found says it’s an 8 to 9 hour trip one way. SO,

The price I pay $475.00 is only one way or return trip too.

Dose the train stays at the station for the night, meaning that I will have to find a hotel at either end of the trip and catch the train the next morning for the return?

    I hope this makes scene.

    Hi Herby,

Which day trip tour are you looking at? Do you have a link you can share for details? At 475 ($US?) it should include hotels on the trip but you mention it is a day trip.

The trip from St. Moritz to Zermatt (or the other way) is indeed about 8 hours so you would want to stay overnight in both towns normally. There are several Glacier Express trains per day in the summer so you can pick and reserve the departure that works best for you (though if you are on a tour it is all pre-selected I think).

If you want to find schedules for the train, search for it on the timetable between those towns. The Glacier Express trains are denoted as GEX: https://www.myswissalp s.com/timetable.

And look here for more details on the train trip: https://www.myswissalp s.com/glacierexpress

    Hi Lucas,

A one way 1st Class ticket + reservation + full meal is heading over CHF350!. It makes a half-fare card worth it just for that trip alone! The fare alone if more than a 3-day Swiss Travel Pass!!!
