Hello Patrick and Welcome to MySwissAlps,

    Yes it runs year round.

You don’t need to “book” (see http://www.myswissalps.com/train/reservations) and you can’t buy tickets so far out.

I recommend using the SBB Mobile app (bit.ly/2ICIUHi) for checking train, bus, boat and cable way timetables, finding fares* and buying tickets on-line if required. In the unlikely event you don’t have a device capable of running the app then you can use the timetable on the SBB website (bit.ly/2HH1U7B).

    * The SBB website shows half-fare prices by default, the mobile app allows you to nominate whether to show full or half-fares (by editing the passenger details in settings) and is also smart enough to offer you the Saver Day Pass (http://www.myswissalps.com/saverdaypass) if that offers the best fare. The app can also display a platform map (at least at the larger stations) to help you make connections. You can also easily filter modes of transport (eg bus or ship).

The app will always show the fastest, most direct routes unless you tell it you want to go a longer way round by including other stations to go VIA. For example, if you wanted to follow the Golden Pass route you would need to search the SBB app looking for Luzern to Montreux via Interlaken and Zweisimmen.

The ‘Regio Express Lötschberger’ service via Kandersteg runs 7/365. Trains leave Spiez every hour at xx.12 past each hour. No need to ‘book’ (ie reserve ) but you will need a pass or ticket of some kind.

Re this post, we are travelling January 31 Zermatt to Murren via laterbrunnen and will now go via Kandersteg (thanks for alert re this more scenic route!!!), I note there are 3 routes on SBB timetable with differing durations and changes 3 stops 4hr 3m (PEX) , Visp 4 changes 4.hr 18min and Fiesch 3 changes 4hr 42m; just asking which might be best, we have a SDP but have one large suitcase to lug around between platforms, thanks in advance.

    Hi Tony,

Avoid the Glacier Express (requires reservation) and any connection that changes at Visp. You should just change trains at Brig and Spiez before reaching Interlaken. If you end up at Fiesch you are on the wrong route but that doesn’t mean you can’t catch a train from Zermatt with direction Fiesch. Just get off at Brig.
