Grindelwald in May/June with two young children

Short summary – read this first

A traveler is planning a family trip to Switzerland in late May or early June, using Grindelwald as their base for 7 days with young children. They want to know about gondola closures, kid-friendly day trips, and accommodation options with outdoor space and cribs.

Key takeaways:
  • Most cable cars around Grindelwald will start running by end May, but higher hiking trails may still be inaccessible due to snow.
  • Consider exploring valley walks near Grindelwald, Lauterbrunnen, and along Lake Thun and Lake Brienz, which are easier for young children.
  • Check out hotel and rental pages for family-friendly accommodations, or post in the accommodation forum for more specific needs.

    Hello,

We are planning to travel to Switzerland in late May or early June with two young children (6 months and a 2.5 year old), using Grindelwald as our base, staying for 7 days. We’re planning to fly into either Zurich or Geneva, whichever is most convenient for access to Grindelwald. We are hoping that we can do some short walks at the top of some of the gondolas and would love to know:

    1. If there are any closures that we should be aware of at this time of year – is this considered the start of the summer season?

    2. If there are any recommendations for day trips from Grindelwald with our young kids

    3. Any other suggestions for our trip! Or great places to stay that offer cribs for our two children? We’d prefer an apartment or small house with some outdoor space and easy access from a train

    Thank you!

    Hi MayaC, welcome to MySwissAlps!

I think you’ll love Grindelwald at that time of the year. It’s not high season yet, so it will be less crowded than in July and August, and nature is splendid. As for your questions:

    1. Most cable cars such as First and Männlichen will start running by end May, so you can visit most mountain tops near Grindelwald. Whether you can make hikes at higher altitude strongly depends on weather and snow conditions. Generally the higher hiking trails will still be inaccessible. Valley walks near Grindelwald, Lauterbrunnen and along Lake Thun and Lake Brienz should be perfectly possible though.

    2. Please find our recommendations at our Grindelwald and Jungfrau region pages. Many children enjoy the cable car, train and boat rides, but of course I don’t know whether your kids will love them as well.

    3. Our hotel and rental pages may help you out. In case you can’t find what you’re looking for, please post in our accommodation forum and add further criteria.

    Does that get you started?
