A traveler is planning a solo trip to Zermatt for three days this January while visiting London. They are looking for suggestions on what to prepare and places to visit, as they feel a bit nervous about traveling alone.
Key takeaways:
Consider flying into Geneva and taking the train to Zermatt, as the Swiss rail system provides convenient connections.
If you plan to make multiple mountain trips, the Swiss Half Fare Card can help you save on travel costs.
Don’t rush your visit; enjoy the views at the main mountains, Klein Matterhorn and Gornergrat, for a memorable experience.

Hi Elizabeth08 and welcome to MySwissAlps!
I don’t think I’ve ever heard of someone visiting London and taking that opportunity to visit Zermatt! 🙂
That is a long trip for 3 nights, but you could fly into Geneva and then train into Zermatt. The Swiss railways timetable will give you the train connections for that trip. http://www.myswissalps.com/ti metable
If you are making a few mountain trips in Zermatt, a Swiss Half Fare Card may make a lot of sense to save some money on your rail travel: http://www.myswissalps.com/sw isshalffarecard
I think you will find Switzerland to be an extremely safe country for solo traveling too!
The simple way to a perfect Swiss trip

Well, I live in London and am a frequent visitor to Zermatt.
Don’t be tempted to try and fit too much in. There is plenty to do in Zermatt itself in a short stay.
Cheapest way usually is Easyjet from Gatwick to Geneva. There is a railway station at Genève-Aéroport, from where trains run twice per hour direct to Visp, where you change in to the Visp – Zermatt railway (nowadays called the MGB)
In Zermatt in January you must be prepared for the uphill lifts to be mainly used by skiers so you may feel out of place but don’t worry.
The two main areas are Klein Matterhorn and Gornergrat. The former is accessed by spectacular cable car, the latter by rack (cog in US English) railway
Attached are some of my photos of the Zermatt area (scenic 2 is the summit of Gornergrat, scenic 3 is the summit of Klein Matterhorn with my left arm visible!)

Thank you so much for the information getting there, suggestions and the heads up for the crowd of skiers, the view looks gorgeous! Will try not to rush the trip and experience the scenery to the fullest (:

I guess compared to flying to Singapore any flight in Europe from London is simple. So why not Zermatt? Can’t argue with that!
You’ll find our recommendations on what to do in Zermatt on my first reply to you. The two main mountains are Gornergrat and Klein Matterhorn – both detailed on that link.
