Travelling to Rigi and Mt Pilatus in March

Short summary – read this first

A traveler is planning a trip to central Switzerland, using Lucerne as their base from March 17-20. They are looking for travel options to Mount Rigi and Mount Pilatus, as some cogwheel trains are not operating during their visit.

Key takeaways:
  • For Mount Pilatus, take the cableway from Kriens since the cogwheel train from Alpnachstad is not operating.
  • To reach Mount Rigi, you can go via Arth-Goldau or Vitznau, as some cable cars are closed.
  • If you opt for the Tellpass, show it at the ticket office for Pilatus and just board for Rigi and other regular trains, buses, and boats.

Hi, we will be using Lucerne as a base to travel around central Switzerland Mar 17-20. I see that some of the cogwheel trains are not running during the time we are there. What is the best way to travel to Mt Rigi and Mt Pilatus during this time.

    Thanks!

Hi Dmcleod6932 and welcome to MySwissAlps!

You can reach Mount Pilatus all year round, but sometimes only one route is operational. The cogwheel train from Alpnachstad to the top operates from early or mid May to 15 November 2020. This means you can get to Pilatus using the cableway from Kriens: http://www.myswissalps.com/pilatus/gettingthere.

Regarding Rigi: you can read about the 3 main train and cable car routes to Rigi at http://www.myswissalps.com/rigi/gettingthere. The cable car from Weggis to Rigi Kaltbad does not operate March 9-April 9 2020. This means you can get to Rigi via Arth-Goldau and Kräbel or your other option is via Vitznau. You could do the “Majestic Round Trip”: going there via Vitznau and combing back via Arth-Goldau: http://www.myswissalps.com/rigi

Thank so much for the information.

We are considering purchasing the Tellpass to travel around central Switzerland. Do still need to purchase tickets for each part of the trip or just board the gondola/train/boat etc and just show the tellpass.

    Thanks!

To reach Pilatus you need to go to the ticket office at Kriens, show your pass and receive a free magnetic strip card which will give you access through the turnstiles.

Rigi you can just board the trains and show your pass if asked. Same for regular trains, buses and boats.

Hi, what would you suggest during Mar17-20, Rigi or Stanserhorn?

    Pilatus or Titlis?

We are taking a trip to Jungfrau already.

    Thanks!

Stanserhorn will still be closed in March.

    Hi dmcleod6932,

Not sure if we’ll get any snow in March but if you would like to see or experience snow, Titlis would be my choice.
