Urgent-Grindelwald/Interlaken&Jungfrau/Swiss pass?
Siddharth is planning his first trip to Switzerland, arriving in Basel this weekend for six days. He seeks advice on affordable accommodation, travel passes, and dining options while wanting to explore major attractions like Jungfrau and scenic hikes.
- Stay in Lauterbrunnen or Grindelwald for a good base to explore, as Interlaken may be less picturesque but centrally located.
- Consider getting the Swiss Half Fare Card for economical travel on both long and short trips.
- Use your cellphone for internet access, but check with your provider about roaming fees, and bring a detailed map for hiking.
- Look for affordable local dining options; cooking may be more expensive and less convenient during your short stay.

Hi everyone,
Firstly, this site is just too awesome with very detailed and diverse information. Thanks for that.
I have to had suddenly advance my trip and hence, urge you to give me a quick reply:I am travelling alone to Switzerland and for the first time. I plan to arrive in Basel this weekend. I will be in Switzerland for 6 days.
After looking up a lot of information from this site. I was looking for cheap accomodation in hostels and have found less than 25 Euro places from http://www.swissbackpackers.ch/About travel, my plans are the following:
Basel-Interlaken/Grindelwald: 25/45 Euros
Interlaken to Milan: 60 Eur (normal direct fare)
(Assuming I get a Swiss pass: Chiasso to Milan: 10 Eur)Must dos within the regions: (let me know about more!)
A couple of day hiking trips (from the day trips mentioned on this site or from https://www.myswissalps.com/community/thread/hiking-around-wengen/)
The First flyer cable from Schreckfeld-Grindelwald
Trip to Jungfrau
Some of those scenic ridesMy questions:
1) Which of the following would be the best place to stay at:
Interlaken/Grindelwald/Lauternburn/Gimmelwald? (or some other place listed on the swissbackpackers site – say Lucerne?)
(I understand that a lot of you recommend Wengen but the cheapest place I found there was 50 Euros)2) I should go for which of the following (or none!)
a) Swiss pass for 4 days: Cost 140 Eur (but I am there for 6 days and this is valid only for 4 consecutive days)
b) Swiss Flexi pass for 3/4 days: Cost: 150/180 Eur (advantage 50 % discount on non-free travel days)
c) Jungfrau pass: Cost 150 Eur (I think this covers more travel options in the region than the other two passes)
d) Swiss Half fare: only 70 Eur!
e) Swiss Card: 131 Eur (saves on those 80-100 Euros travelling into and out and half fare on travel inside)3) The hostels listed all have internet and in many cases, wifi. I wasn’t planning to take my laptop because it’s too heavy
but I don’t think they have computers there. I suppose I could borrow someone’s computer there for a bit?
My cellphone is internet-capable and has GPRS/GPS etc. Would that be of good use that I should take a sim card and internet plan
while I am in Switzerland? (especially since I don’t have company and there is a good chance I might get lost somewhere!)
The internet rates for sim cards purchased in Germany are not valid in Switzerland as far as I could find out and to use the same sim card there is very expensive.4) Some cheap eating options please! I guess the lack of them on this site means there aren’t probably many. I don’t want to cook myself as I am only there for 6 days. Besides, I want to try out some local food.
Hoping for a speedy response!
Cheers
Siddharth
