Hiking from Mannlichen to Kleine Scheidegg on the Panorama Trail or vice versa. Which direction is easier as well as better viewing. Also will your hotel advise you if the mountain tops are cloudy if you ask or is there some other way to find out before we venture out and pay for the trip. E.g. Jungfraujoch railway.

    Hi Swede4life,

You can start your hike on the Panorama Trail from either point. But walking from Männlichen to Kleine Scheidegg would give you a better view of the Eiger, Monch and Jungfrau mountains ahead. If you have time you can even combine this hike with the Royal Walk, which is easily accessible from Männlichen. Please find more details in the links below:

Be sure to check the weather forecast before you start your hike. You can also check the official website for live weather updates and webcam visuals.

    Regards,

    Anna

Having done this walk maybe 35 times I whole heartedly agree with Anna’s recommendation.

Hiking direction Männlichen to Kleine Scheidegg is the way to go. In this direction the views are to in front of you rather than to your back. Also, this is far easier than KS to M direction. KS to M is uphill most of the way vs gentle downhill in M to KS direction.

Are you staying in Wengen? If so, you can simply look out your window or stand outside in Wengen and look up to see if Männlichen peak is clear. That said, it is always a very very good idea to check weather forecasts, especially for the rest of your day, to see how you should dress/how to plan. Weather blows up very quickly in the Alps. Weather forecasts are pretty reliable one day in advance, not much further. Be sure to use the link Anna provided. Do not use weather.com, wunderground.com, or any of other app that comes on your phone. Those are nonsense. I can’t tell you how many times I have been sitting on our veranda in Wengen enjoying the sunshine and 70F degree weather only to find that weather.com app on my phone told me it was snowing there!

To get to the trail start take the gondola from center of Wengen village up to Männlichen. From Kleine Scheidegg you take the Jungfrau railways train from KS back to Wengen.

Kim, thank you. We are staying in Wengen. What else would you see around Wengen?

This brings back so many memories from our wonderful visit back in September of 2019. we too stayed in Wengen and did the exact same hike you are considering. A very easy one and only takes a few hours even with a “detour” to the Royal Walk. If have extra time, you can hike back to Wengen via a hike from Kleine Scheidegg to Wengen which roughly parallels the train tracks. It is a gentle down hill, easy hike as well.

Don’t miss the view from the church in Wengen. Probably the best view of the valley in the entire town.

Hopefully you have at least a few days in Wengen. There is more than enough to do there and in surrounding areas to keep you busy for a week at least. In 2001 we stayed for three months and never ran out of things to do and see! I put together a long document based on our many trips there, you can find it in a series of three PDFs at http://www.myswissalps.com/forum/topic/tips-about-wengen-and-the-jungfrau-region-by-kim. I haven’t updated it for several years but all the sites are still there 🙂 Post up if you have further questions.

    Hi Swede4lif,

Most of the hotels will have a live feed/cam of the weather on the mountains, usually somewhere in the lobby, or at or near the front desk. I did the Panorama trail in Sept, 2018. Going the ‘downhill’ direction from Mannlichen to Kleine S. It was a beautiful walk/hike with, (as Kim has noted) the 3 mountains in full view. The skies were overcast, no rain, and the Eiger’s top didn’t want to leave the clouds. But it was very impressive with the Eiger straight ahead the whole time. As far as what else to in/around Wengen…….there are tons of things to do and see. The hike/walk from Grutschalp to Murren is also beautiful and very impressive with great views of the 3 mts, and Murren is nice also with access to the Schilthorn and Allmenhubbel. So much to do. Have fun planning and enjoy the trip.

The walk from Mannlichen to KS is downhill and easy. It should take 1:20 hrs and is a good place to stop for a beer or lunch. If you would like to walk some more you can continue from KS up to Eigergletscher which also takes about 1:20 hrs and you can return by train from Eigergletscher. Personally I think it is a very nice walk as you are walking strait towards Jungfrau and Monch with beautiful views on either side and there is a pretty man-made lake at the top. It is however uphill but if you take it slow and enjoy the scenery we did not find it that difficult (we are in our mid 60s).

Another option is walking from KS back to Wengen as pkerr suggests but that is quite a bit longer. I would consider going partway perhaps KS to Wengernalp which is 1:00 hr then taking the train from Wengernalp to Wengen. For me this section had the best scenery anyway. On our first trip to Wengen we did all 3 legs the first day. That is Mannlichen to KS, KS to Eigergletscher and train back to KS, then walk back from KS to Wengernalp and train to Wengen. We were back by mid afternoon.
