Weather in late early May in Interlaken area

Short summary – read this first

A traveler is planning a trip to Zurich, Interlaken, Grindelwald, and Austria in early May with their daughter. They are eager to hike in the Alps but are unsure about the snow conditions and whether hiking will be possible during that time. It's great to note that while high trails may be closed, there are still many lower trails accessible.

Key takeaways:
  • Expect some higher elevation trails to be closed in early May due to lingering snow.
  • Explore valley trails such as those in Lauterbrunnen and around the lakes, which will be open for hiking.
  • Always check local conditions and updates before heading out to ensure safe hikes.

My daughter and I hope to visit Zurich, Interlaken, Grindelwald, and over into Austria in early May. We really enjoy alpine hiking, but I am having some trouble finding out just how far spring weather will actually have penetrated into the Alps. Is it realistic to expect to be able to hike then? Or will there likely still be too much snow?

    Thanks!

    Hi nomeman,

May is considered a transition period in the Jungfrau region mountains. Most hiking trails in the higher elevations may not be accessible at this time of the year. However there will be plenty of trails open in the valleys and around the lakes. A couple of suggestions below:

    Lauterbrunnen: http://www.myswissalps.com/hiking/lauterbrunnen-stechelberg

    Seeuferweg Iseltwald: http://www.myswissalps.com/hiking/giessbach-iseltwald
