Weather in Switzerland in May-June

Short summary – read this first

A traveler named AmalHamdan is planning their first trip to Switzerland for a week and is unsure when to go for the best weather. They initially considered late May but have concerns about chilly temperatures and rain in the Geneva region, especially around Interlaken and Lauterbrunnen. They are looking for recommendations on whether early or mid-June would be a better time to visit.

Key takeaways:
  • Consider visiting late June for warmer weather and longer daylight hours, which is ideal for hiking.
  • Check the weather forecast before your trip, as it can be unpredictable.
  • If not hiking extensively, late May could work, but trails may still be closed due to snow.

Hello, I am planning to visit Switzerland for the first time for a week and I’m having a hard time choosing when to go. I am interested in warm weather without much rain. I first thought the end of May would be a good idea but from reading online it seems like around the Geneva region, where the cute cities like Interlaken and Lauterbrunnen are, are still chilly and lots of rain. Is that true? Is early June or mid June a better time to visit? What are you recs for good weather?

Hi AmalHamdan and welcome to MySwissAlps.com!

In the mountains and everywhere with higher altitudes May is still chilly, that is true. One of my favorite months to travel in the mountains is September and June. Note, that some high altitude walking trails may be still closed in June because of snow. These pages will be useful for you:

Although Switzerland is a very small country compared to countries like India or China or the USA, Interlaken and Lauterbrunnen are not in the Geneva region. They are in the Jungfrau region which is part of the Bernese Oberland region. You can learn more about the Jungfrau region and its activity options here: http://www.myswissalps.com/jungfrauregion/activities.

Thank you for your help. Can you advise on when in June is a good time to go? Mid or late June to get the best out of the weather?

If you want to hike, then late June would be better.

It should be a bit warmer in late June. But it is difficult to say anything for sure as the weather is quite unpredictable. 🙂

Late June is my favorite time to go to Switzerland, and most of my hiking trips have been during the last two weeks of June, into the first few days of July. The hours of daylight are longest then as well, which allows for longer hikes.

I travelled in May and I liked the weather. It was about 10C and it was like winter in India. Since it was shoulder season it was not crowded and prices for accommodation were reasonable. We did not hike so no comments on that. I could survive on a light jacket without any travel

    Hi AmalHamdan,

I prefer the later half of May when it’s warm but not hot. There’s a saying that goes: April showers bring May flowers. In the mountains, it’s probably the start of Spring weather. Some trails won’t be accessible yet but if you’re not planning to hike a lot, I think it makes little difference if you visit in late May or June. But as Ildiko mentioned, the weather can be unpredictable so be sure to check the weather forecast before your trip.

    Regards,

    Anna
