Delraysun1 is planning a 3-night stay in early September and is choosing between the villages of Wengen and Mürren. They are looking for advice on accommodations and amenities in each village to make their decision easier.
Key takeaways:
Wengen offers more restaurants, shops, and hotels, making it a better choice for variety.
Mürren is quieter and scenic, ideal for a peaceful stay but has fewer amenities.
Consider using the Swiss Travel Pass for easy access to nearby attractions like the Jungfraujoch and hikes in the region.
The cog railway from Lauterbrunnen to Wengen provides stunning views and is more straightforward than the cable car to Mürren.

Trying to decide which of these villages to stay in for 3 nights in early September. Questions include variety of accommodations, village ammenities including variety of restaurants, shops, etc.
Both are lovely. In terms of access. Wengen is more accessible than Mürren. Wengen has more restaurants, shops, and hotels. Mürren is a quieter village, so if you are looking for more ‘peace’, then perhaps Mürren would be better.

Hello Delraysun1! We stayed in Wengen for three nights last June and really enjoyed it. There is a variety of hotels and restaurants to choose from and the scenery was spectacular. It was very accessible from Lauterbrunnen on the scenic cog railway, with a lovely view of the valley as you ascend and descend. Of course, there is also the cable car transport to Mannlichen where you can hike the Panorama trail to Kleine Scheidegg. From there you can go up to Jungfraujoch fairly easily.
We also took the cable car to Grütschalp and did the popular hike to Mürren from there. Mürren is beautiful and with easy access to the Schilthorn. We noted a fair amount of restaurants and hotels there too, although less than Wengen.
Out of the two villages, I think Wengen is more easily accessible than Mürren, since you only have to use the train to get there. The cable cars to Mürren (and to Grütschalp, then the train) are efficient, but we found them very crowded at times. My husband commented that he was glad that we didn’t have to tote luggage on them when we were standing shoulder-to-shoulder with other passengers.
Both villages have much to offer in terms of scenery, views and hikes. Good luck with your trip planning!
As mentioned above, you can’t go wrong as far as scenery Is concerned, however if your staying 3 nights, I believe you’re probably going to be visiting other sights in the region as well. That being said, Murren is pretty much at the end of the valley, and is good to visit for the day. Only because it will take some time to leave on a daily basis to visit other sights from there. The Grutschalp-to-Murren hike is absolutely beautiful, with the big three mountains in view the whole time. If you want, you can see the Schilthorn, and even Allmendhubel, then head down to Stechelberg, and back to Lauterbrunnen in one basic loop. (In Murren, try to stop in for a drink at the Gondabar, which used to be a gondola, and is now a tiny bar, and great apres ski gathering during ski season.) Not to take anything away from Murren, but again, your looking at anywhere from an hour or so (give or take), just to get to Lauterbrunnen as versus 13 min from Wengen. Jus*t something to keep in mind. Again, enjoy.
Thanks for your input, as always. Yes, Wengen checks a lot more box’s so we are goin g to stay there. We will be doing alot of hiking in the Jungfraugh region as well as mountain biking. Just booked the Beausite Park Hotel.
Thanks !
