Wengernalp train covered by Swiss Travel Pass?

Short summary – read this first

Miggles is planning a day trip from Grindewald to Lauterbrunnen in late May and wants to know if the Wengenalp train is covered by the Swiss Travel Pass and if it's worth taking. They also have concerns about managing the easy Valley trail with their companion, as well as fitting in some time to explore Interlaken before heading back.

Key takeaways:
  • The Wengenalp train is partially covered by the Swiss Travel Pass, but a discounted ticket will be needed for part of the route.
  • The Valley trail in Lauterbrunnen is easy and offers beautiful scenery; just take it at your own pace.
  • Consider taking a bus back after your walk to see Trümmelbach Falls if time allows.
  • Plan your travel with the SBB timetable for a smooth journey.
  • You can explore Interlaken after your walk, which is just a short train ride from Grindewald.

Is the Wengenalp train from Grindewald to Lauterbrunnen covered with the Swiss Travel Pass? Is it worth taking for a day trip from Grindwilde rather than a regular train? Also, with two of us in our 70’s can we manage the easy trail from Lauterbrunnen on the Valley trail? I doubt we would last the whole trip. Is there something we should see before turning around. On the same day should we manage walking around Interlaken too before heading back to Grindewald.

We are traveling in late May.

    Thanks.

    Hello Miggles,

Here you can find the Swiss Travel Pass coverage map in the below link:

If you look on the map, all the routes that are marked with dotted lines is when you would need to purchase a discounted ticket. The solid red lines denote that it is covered with your Swiss Travel Pass. If you traveled from Lauterbrunnen to Grindelwald via Zweilütschinen, this would be included. Travel on the Wengernalp train line. From Lauterbrunnen, you can travel as far as Wengen, then you will need to buy a discounted ticket. Similarly you can travel to Grindelwald too, but you will need to purchase a discounted ticket onwards to Kleine Scheidegg for example.

You are your best judge on what you think you are capable of in terms of walking. The trail in Lauterbrunnen is considered an easy walk with some stunning scenery. You should be ok, just take it easy and do as much as you can (or as little). More deatils on the walk here:

If you manage to walk all of it, you have the option take the bus back to Lauterbrunnen and even stop off to view the Trümmelbach falls.

Plan your journey with the SBB timetable: https://www.myswissalps.com/timetable

You can always see after your walk if you feel up to taking the train into Interlaken for a little excursion. It’s roughly a 35 minute train ride from Grindelwald.

    Kind regards,

    Yolanda

    Yolanda,

Thank you for the resources. It appears we will be paying for a discounted ticket for at least part of the Wengenalp train. Your example was from Lauterbrunnen. We will be traveling from Grindewald. We will buy a discounted ticket at least to Wengen. Is the remainder free? Returning to Grindewald or possibly Interlaken is free with STP going through Zweilutschinen.

I believe we can do both towns in a day if we walk only part of the Valley Trail. Interlaken back to Grindewald is a very short ride to get back to our base. A day or two later, we return to Interlaken to take the Lake Brienz boat ride then on to Lucerne.

    Hi Miggles,

Wengen and Grindelwald are located on opposite sides of the mountain. You can travel from Interlaken to Wengen and vice versa for free with the Swiss Travel Pass. Similarly, you can travel for free from Interlaken to Grindelwald and vice versa with the Swiss Travel Pass.

If you’re planning to travel directly from Grindelwald to Wengen via Kleine Scheidegg, this route is only discounted with the Swiss Travel Pass.

    Regards,

    Anna
