What to wear on Swiss mountains in August

Short summary – read this first

A traveler is heading to Switzerland on August 8th and wants advice on what to pack for their trip, specifically mentioning plans to take the Gornergrat train in Zermatt, as well as visit the Jungfraujoch and Mt. Titlis. They’re curious about the typical cold temperatures on these mountains and whether a light windbreaker will suffice.

Key takeaways:
  • Always pack extra layers for mountain trips, as temperatures can drop significantly with altitude and weather can change quickly.
  • A light windbreaker is a good choice, but also bring a warmer layer, like a jumper, for comfort.
  • Check current temperature trends and forecasts before your trip to better prepare for conditions in August.
  • For extensive travel on trains and public transport, consider getting a Swiss Travel Pass to save on costs.

    This is a useful website.

On average, temperature drops 1o degrees Celsius for every 1000 meters of altitude:

To answer your question in more detail , it will be useful to understand what you intend to do on those mountain tops, and for how long. Do you have remote release for your cameras. or, will you use your fingers?

    Hello Bsphoto22,

Being on the mountains in whatever season will always require some extra layers to bring along. In summer, the temperatures can be “nice and warm” on the mountains, but again, you can also be caught by a storm and rainfall during summer. A winder-breaker is for sure a good idea, I would also bring at least one warmer, layer, such a jumper, or similar.

To get an idea of the current temperatures, which won’t change too much by August, check the websites and apps recommended here:
