Remember that Zermatt is not all about the Matterhorn. As such Gornergrat is the best all round destination: constant views of the Matterhorn on the way up on the train, and from the summit. But Gornergrat also gets you close to the highest peak in Switzerland the Dufourspitz. There are also all the other 4000 metre plus peaks all around you.
Klein Matterhorn and Schwarzsee are good for a closer view on the Matterhorn
Rothorn is too distant.

Hi SDTraveler,
All offer different perspectives, however I would advise Gornergrat or Sunnegga. Both offer pretty magical views of the Matterhorn. Views from Klein Matterhorn are impressive too, but the angle is quite different from how the Matterhorn is usually photographed.
Kind regards,
Yolanda

Trockener Steg is my favourite!

Riffelalp is my favorite. It is noticeably closer than Gornergrat to the Matterhorn. My thumbnail photo was taken from Riffelalp. See attached photo
Riffelsee with the reflection on the lake is nice too.

Hi SD Traveler
For me, the most beautiful view of the Matterhorn is from Zermatt. At Schwarzsee it is also very beautiful and close to see. On the Riffelsee, the mountain is beautifully reflected in the lake.
My thumbnail photo is taken from Zermatt 🙂

Hi, SD Traveler,
The best answer to your post is: all of the above!! Simply put, you can’t go wrong with any of them. I went to both the Kleine Matterhorn and rhe Gornergrat, (same day) and the Gornergrat was one of the highlights of my two week journey throughout Switzerland. I want to go to the Rothorn my next time there. Have fun whichever you do choose.

Danielsan

Is the Riffelsee trail open in April?

Hi Ava T,
The Riffelsee trail (Riffelsee – Riffelberg) is currently closed. If you just want to visit Riffelsee, you can take the cogwheel train to Rotenboden (the last stop before Gornergrat) , walk and follow the sign to Riffelsee (about 15 mins)., then come back the same way.

Anna

I was hoping to find somewhere to catch the Matterhorn reflection when I am in Zermatt from 4/9-4/11. Anywhere else open at that time?

Hi Ava T,
In April, in good weather you can still walk to RIffelsee and just turn back once you are done. However the lake may or may not still be frozen around that time.

Anna
