Best footware to visit Jungfrau Region + mountains

Short summary – read this first

A traveler is planning a trip to Wengen, Mürren, Grindelwald, and Titlis in December and is looking for advice on what kind of boots to buy. They want to know if waterproof boots are necessary or if water-resistant ones will be enough for their winter adventures.

Key takeaways:
  • Choose waterproof boots with a GoreTex or similar liner for winter trips to avoid wet and cold feet.
  • Wellies are highly recommended for absolute waterproofing, so consider those for extra protection.
  • It's sometimes better to buy boots in Switzerland, as there are options in towns like Zermatt and Wengen that you might prefer over what you find at home.

Waterproof. Hiking style boots with a GoreTex or similar liner are what I wear for mountaintop excursions, especially in the winter. Even if you spend time in cities & villages, those streets & sidewalks get wet & sloppy too in the winter. Water resistant is pretty useless once you get past the “resistant” point; you’ll have wet and/or cold feet the rest of the day.

    Hello Nemat,

I have made the experience, that only wellies are really and absolutely waterproof shoes/boots, no matter what! As waterproof as possible would for sure be the best advice.

I was just there in September and concur that you will want waterproof boots or hiking shoes to knock around in. I bought mine here in the states. But if I had it to do over again, i probably would wait and buy them there. I really liked the ones I saw in Zermatt and Wengen better than the ones I carried over. Just my 2 cents.
