Short summary – read this first

A traveler is planning a one-day trip to Zermatt from Täsch and wants advice on using their Swiss Travel Pass for various mountain excursions, including the Matterhorn Glacier Paradise, Gornergrat, and Sunnegga funicular. They are also wondering if they need additional tickets like the Peak2Peak or half-fare cards.

Key takeaways:
  • With the Swiss Travel Pass, the train to Zermatt is free, while mountain excursions are half-price.
  • Children can travel for free with a Swiss Family Card if applicable.
  • If planning to visit both Matterhorn Glacier and Gornergrat in one day, consider purchasing a Peak2Peak ticket.
  • You can buy mountain tickets on the day of travel, but it's wise to check the weather first.

We will be having swiss passes with us.The  kids  want to see the matterhorn glacier paradise , Gornegrat and ride the Sunnega funicular as well. ( no skiers in our group).
will it be covered all by the Swiss passes ? Do we have to avail of the peak2peak or half fare cards ?

    Hi Iri,

    Welcome to MySwissAlps.

With the Swiss Travel Pass, the train journey to Zermatt is free, whereas mountain excursions to Gornergrat (https://www.myswissalps.com/activity/gornergrat/), Matterhorn Glacier Paradise (https://www.myswissalps.com/activity/matterhorn/) and Sunnegga-Rothorn (https://www.myswissalps.com/activity/sunnegga-rothorn/) are half-price when you present the Swiss Travel Pass at the counter. If you have the Swiss Family Card, then your children can travel along for free and require no tickets at all.

The Peak2Peak ticket is a combo ticket for excursions to Gornergrat and Matterhorn Glacier Paradise on the same day. This ticket is only available when the Riffelberg Express is in operation. When are you travelling to Zermatt by the way?

    Regards,

    Anna

    Hello Anna

Our travel will be this month .

We are interested about the peak2 peak pass as well as the Sunnega funicular .
Is there a need to buy tickets in advance ?  Coz we were advised to check the webcam 2 days before as tickets are non -refundable .
Can we just purchase on the day of our visit?
    please advise

    Hi Iri,

    Just to clarify:

    • You would need a Peak2Peak ticket if you are wanting to visit the Matterhorn Glacier and Gornergrat in the one day.
    • You would need a Peak Pass if you are wanting to visit all three mountain peaks in Zermatt.  This would allow for unlimited travel for the amount of days purchased for.

Yes, you can buy in advance but agree, you are best to check the weather forecast first, so yes, you can purchase on the day of travel.

If you have the Swiss Travel Pass, discounts will apply.  More details can be found on the Peak2Peak ticket and the Peak Pass in our Zermatt travel guide.  Scroll to “Traveling: reaching Zermatt, traveling in town, rail passes, mountain tickets, and map”

    Kind regards,

    Yolanda
